You walk into a place for the very first time. Suddenly, you feel sure you have been here before. You even feel you know what will happen next. This strange feeling has a French name: deja vu.

"Deja vu" means "already seen." Almost everyone feels it sometimes. About two-thirds of people say they have had it. It is most common in young people and grows rarer with age. It usually lasts only a few seconds.

Scientists are not completely sure what causes it. But many think it is a small mistake in memory. The brain may treat a brand-new scene as if it were an old memory, just for a moment.

One idea is about timing. Your brain takes in a scene through different paths at slightly different speeds. If one path is a tiny bit slow, the brain may feel it has seen the scene twice.

Another idea is that something small feels familiar. A smell, a sound, or the shape of a room may match an old memory you have forgotten. The brain notices the match but cannot find where it came from.

So deja vu is probably not a sign of the future or a past life. It is most likely your busy brain making a tiny, harmless error, a little glitch that makes the world feel mysterious for a moment.

01You walk into a place for the very first time. Suddenly, you feel sure you have been here before. You even feel you know what will happen next. This strange feeling has a French name: deja vu.

02"Deja vu" means "already seen." Almost everyone feels it sometimes. About two-thirds of people say they have had it. It is most common in young people and grows rarer with age. It usually lasts only a few seconds.

03Scientists are not completely sure what causes it. But many think it is a small mistake in memory. The brain may treat a brand-new scene as if it were an old memory, just for a moment.

04One idea is about timing. Your brain takes in a scene through different paths at slightly different speeds. If one path is a tiny bit slow, the brain may feel it has seen the scene twice.

05Another idea is that something small feels familiar. A smell, a sound, or the shape of a room may match an old memory you have forgotten. The brain notices the match but cannot find where it came from.

06So deja vu is probably not a sign of the future or a past life. It is most likely your busy brain making a tiny, harmless error, a little glitch that makes the world feel mysterious for a moment.

Day39(第一印象)やDay87(時間感覚)とも脳でつながります^^

  • as if ~ まるで〜のように as if it were an old memory。
