A refrigerator keeps your food cold and fresh, day and night. It works around the clock, 24 hours a day. It seems to make coldness out of nothing. But a fridge cannot create cold. Instead, it cleverly moves heat away.

To understand this, remember one rule. "Cold" is just a lack of heat. To make something colder, you do not add cold. You take heat away from it. That is the secret job of a refrigerator.

Inside the fridge runs a special liquid. As this liquid flows through pipes inside, it soaks up heat from the food and air. This makes the inside of the fridge colder. Most fridges stay near 4 degrees Celsius.

The liquid then carries that heat to pipes on the back or bottom of the fridge. There, it releases the heat into your kitchen. This is why the back of a refrigerator often feels warm.

So a fridge is really a heat mover. It takes heat from inside and dumps it outside, again and again. The food stays cold because its heat keeps being carried away.

The same idea cools cars and whole buildings. The next time you open the fridge, feel the warm air behind it. That warmth is the heat that left your food, keeping your dinner fresh.

01A refrigerator keeps your food cold and fresh, day and night. It works around the clock, 24 hours a day. It seems to make coldness out of nothing. But a fridge cannot create cold. Instead, it cleverly moves heat away.

02To understand this, remember one rule. "Cold" is just a lack of heat. To make something colder, you do not add cold. You take heat away from it. That is the secret job of a refrigerator.

03Inside the fridge runs a special liquid. As this liquid flows through pipes inside, it soaks up heat from the food and air. This makes the inside of the fridge colder. Most fridges stay near 4 degrees Celsius.

04The liquid then carries that heat to pipes on the back or bottom of the fridge. There, it releases the heat into your kitchen. This is why the back of a refrigerator often feels warm.

05So a fridge is really a heat mover. It takes heat from inside and dumps it outside, again and again. The food stays cold because its heat keeps being carried away.

06The same idea cools cars and whole buildings. The next time you open the fridge, feel the warm air behind it. That warmth is the heat that left your food, keeping your dinner fresh.
