Today we pay with paper bills, cards, and phones. But for most of history, money was made of metal. Heavy coins of gold, silver, and copper were used everywhere. So who first made light paper money?
The answer is China, more than a thousand years ago. Chinese traders had a big problem. To buy many goods, they had to carry huge piles of heavy copper coins. Long journeys with so much metal were slow and dangerous.
To solve this, merchants began to leave their coins with someone they trusted. In return, they received a paper note. The note was a promise: it could be traded back for the coins later.
These notes were much lighter than coins. People could carry a small fortune in a pocket. Soon the government saw the idea and began to print official paper money for everyone to use. Soon paper money spread to cities across the land.
When travelers from Europe visited China, they were amazed. In their countries, money was still only metal. The idea of valuable paper seemed almost like magic to them. They had never seen anything like it.
It took hundreds of years for paper money to spread to the rest of the world. So the bills in your wallet began as a clever trick by Chinese traders, tired of carrying heavy coins.

What problem led Chinese traders to invent paper notes?
"Long journeys with so much metal were slow and dangerous."
What was the paper note originally?
"The note was a promise: it could be traded back for the coins later."
In what order did paper money develop?
"merchants began to leave their coins... Soon the government saw the idea and began to print official paper money."
Why were European travelers amazed?
"In their countries, money was still only metal. The idea of valuable paper seemed almost like magic."

01Today we pay with paper bills, cards, and phones. But for most of history, money was made of metal. Heavy coins of gold, silver, and copper were used everywhere. So who first made light paper money?
02The answer is China, more than a thousand years ago. Chinese traders had a big problem. To buy many goods, they had to carry huge piles of heavy copper coins. Long journeys with so much metal were slow and dangerous.
03To solve this, merchants began to leave their coins with someone they trusted. In return, they received a paper note. The note was a promise: it could be traded back for the coins later.
04These notes were much lighter than coins. People could carry a small fortune in a pocket. Soon the government saw the idea and began to print official paper money for everyone to use. Soon paper money spread to cities across the land.
05When travelers from Europe visited China, they were amazed. In their countries, money was still only metal. The idea of valuable paper seemed almost like magic to them. They had never seen anything like it.
06It took hundreds of years for paper money to spread to the rest of the world. So the bills in your wallet began as a clever trick by Chinese traders, tired of carrying heavy coins.
