Humans cannot breathe underwater. If we stay under too long, we must come up for air. Yet fish live their whole lives in water, never coming up to breathe. How do they do it?
Like us, fish need oxygen to live. We get oxygen from the air, using our lungs. But there is oxygen in water too, mixed in among the water itself. Fish have a special way to take it out.
Instead of lungs, fish have gills. Gills are soft, feathery parts on the sides of a fish's head. They hold thousands of tiny blood vessels. As water flows over the gills, the gills pull the oxygen out of it.
A fish breathes by opening its mouth and taking in water. The water passes over the gills, which grab the oxygen. Then the used water flows out through openings on the sides. You can often see these flaps move, sometimes about twice a second.
This is why most fish cannot live out of water. In the air, their gills dry out and stick together. They can no longer pull in oxygen, even though the air is full of it.
So gills are like underwater lungs. The next time you watch a fish, look at the sides of its head. Those gentle, moving flaps are letting it breathe in a world we never could.

How do gills take oxygen from the water?
"They hold thousands of tiny blood vessels. As water flows over the gills, the gills pull the oxygen out of it."
Why can't most fish live out of water, even though air has plenty of oxygen?
"their gills dry out and stick together. They can no longer pull in oxygen, even though the air is full of it."
What is the correct path of water through a fish?
"opening its mouth and taking in water. The water passes over the gills... Then the used water flows out through openings on the sides."
Why does the writer call gills "underwater lungs"?
"Instead of lungs, fish have gills."

01Humans cannot breathe underwater. If we stay under too long, we must come up for air. Yet fish live their whole lives in water, never coming up to breathe. How do they do it?
02Like us, fish need oxygen to live. We get oxygen from the air, using our lungs. But there is oxygen in water too, mixed in among the water itself. Fish have a special way to take it out.
03Instead of lungs, fish have gills. Gills are soft, feathery parts on the sides of a fish's head. They hold thousands of tiny blood vessels. As water flows over the gills, the gills pull the oxygen out of it.
04A fish breathes by opening its mouth and taking in water. The water passes over the gills, which grab the oxygen. Then the used water flows out through openings on the sides. You can often see these flaps move, sometimes about twice a second.
05This is why most fish cannot live out of water. In the air, their gills dry out and stick together. They can no longer pull in oxygen, even though the air is full of it.
06So gills are like underwater lungs. The next time you watch a fish, look at the sides of its head. Those gentle, moving flaps are letting it breathe in a world we never could.

Day32(氷)やDay59(サンゴ)とも環境でつながりますね。
