When something is very large, we call it "jumbo." There are jumbo jets, jumbo burgers, and jumbo bags of snacks. The word feels old and ordinary. But it actually comes from one very famous animal.
In the 1800s, there was a huge African elephant named Jumbo. He lived first in a zoo in London. He was one of the largest elephants ever kept by people, standing about 3 meters tall. Some say his name came from an African word.
Children in London loved Jumbo. They rode on his back and fed him treats. His enormous size amazed everyone who saw him. He became a star, and crowds came just to see him. For many years, he was the most famous animal in Britain.
Then, in 1882, an American showman named P. T. Barnum bought Jumbo. He took the elephant to the United States to join his traveling circus. Many British people were sad and even angry to lose him.
In America, Jumbo became even more famous. Barnum used his name everywhere. Soon, people started using "jumbo" to mean anything huge. The elephant's name slowly turned into a common English word.
Sadly, Jumbo died only a few years later. But his name never disappeared. So every time you order a jumbo size, you are remembering a gentle giant from more than 140 years ago.

How did "jumbo" become an ordinary English word?
"Barnum used his name everywhere. Soon, people started using 'jumbo' to mean anything huge."
What happened to Jumbo in 1882?
"in 1882, an American showman named P. T. Barnum bought Jumbo." 死んだのは "only a few years later"。
How did British people feel when Jumbo was sold?
"Many British people were sad and even angry to lose him."
What is the writer's point in the last sentence?
"you are remembering a gentle giant from more than 140 years ago."

jumboのほか、sandwich(伯爵)、boycott(人名)も同じ仲間。
