Potato chips are one of the most popular snacks in the world. They are thin, crispy, and salty. But this famous snack was not planned. The story says it began with an angry customer in 1853.

The story takes place at a restaurant in the United States. A cook named George Crum worked there. One of his dishes was fried potatoes, cut thick like the chips we eat with fish today. At that time, no one had ever seen very thin, crispy chips.

One day, a customer sent his potatoes back to the kitchen. He said they were too thick and too soft. Crum tried again, but the man kept complaining. The cook grew more and more annoyed.

Finally, Crum decided to teach the man a lesson. He cut the potatoes as thin as paper. He fried them until they were hard and crispy, then covered them in salt. He was sure the customer would hate them.

But the plan failed in a wonderful way. The customer loved the thin, crispy slices. Soon other people wanted them too. Crum's "angry" potatoes became a hit at the restaurant.

So the next time you open a bag of chips, smile. A snack loved by millions may have started as a small act of revenge, more than 170 years ago.

01Potato chips are one of the most popular snacks in the world. They are thin, crispy, and salty. But this famous snack was not planned. The story says it began with an angry customer in 1853.

02The story takes place at a restaurant in the United States. A cook named George Crum worked there. One of his dishes was fried potatoes, cut thick like the chips we eat with fish today. At that time, no one had ever seen very thin, crispy chips.

03One day, a customer sent his potatoes back to the kitchen. He said they were too thick and too soft. Crum tried again, but the man kept complaining. The cook grew more and more annoyed.

04Finally, Crum decided to teach the man a lesson. He cut the potatoes as thin as paper. He fried them until they were hard and crispy, then covered them in salt. He was sure the customer would hate them.

05But the plan failed in a wonderful way. The customer loved the thin, crispy slices. Soon other people wanted them too. Crum's "angry" potatoes became a hit at the restaurant.

06So the next time you open a bag of chips, smile. A snack loved by millions may have started as a small act of revenge, more than 170 years ago.
