Why Time Feels Faster as We Get Older

— Where did the years go? —

When you were a small child, a single summer felt endless. Now, for adults, a whole year can rush by. Many people feel that time speeds up as they get older. But the clock has not changed. Our minds have.

One reason is about new experiences. When we are young, almost everything is new. A first trip, a first friend, a first day at school. The brain pays close attention and stores many strong memories.

New memories make a period feel long when we look back. A summer full of new things seems to last forever. As adults, our days often repeat. Same job, same route, same meals. Few new memories are made.

So a busy adult year can feel short in our memory, even though it was packed with hours. There were many days, but not many that the brain marked as special and different.

There is also a math idea. To a 5-year-old, one year is a huge part of life. To a 50-year-old, one year is only a tiny slice. Each year feels smaller than the last.

The good news is that we can slow time down. By trying new things, we give the brain fresh memories. So learn a skill, visit new places, and your years may feel rich and long again.

01When you were a small child, a single summer felt endless. Now, for adults, a whole year can rush by. Many people feel that time speeds up as they get older. But the clock has not changed. Our minds have.

02One reason is about new experiences. When we are young, almost everything is new. A first trip, a first friend, a first day at school. The brain pays close attention and stores many strong memories.

03New memories make a period feel long when we look back. A summer full of new things seems to last forever. As adults, our days often repeat. Same job, same route, same meals. Few new memories are made.

04So a busy adult year can feel short in our memory, even though it was packed with hours. There were many days, but not many that the brain marked as special and different.

05There is also a math idea. To a 5-year-old, one year is a huge part of life. To a 50-year-old, one year is only a tiny slice. Each year feels smaller than the last.

06The good news is that we can slow time down. By trying new things, we give the brain fresh memories. So learn a skill, visit new places, and your years may feel rich and long again.
