Look at any clock, and the hands move in the same direction. They go to the right, then down, then left, then up. We call this "clockwise." But why do clocks turn this way and not the other?

The answer goes back thousands of years, before clocks with hands even existed. People first told time using the sun. They built sundials, which are flat plates with a stick in the middle. Sundials have been used for thousands of years.

As the sun moves across the sky, the stick makes a shadow. The shadow slowly moves around the plate. In the northern half of the world, this shadow moves in the direction we now call clockwise.

Most early clock makers lived in the northern half of the world, in places like Europe. They were used to watching shadows move that way on sundials. So they made their new clocks copy the same motion.

It is interesting to imagine another world. If clocks had been invented south of the equator, shadows there turn the other way. Our clocks might have run "backwards" instead.

So clockwise is not a law of nature. It is a habit, frozen in time, copied from the moving shadow of an ancient sundial. A small choice, long ago, still rules our clocks today. We simply never questioned it.

01Look at any clock, and the hands move in the same direction. They go to the right, then down, then left, then up. We call this "clockwise." But why do clocks turn this way and not the other?

02The answer goes back thousands of years, before clocks with hands even existed. People first told time using the sun. They built sundials, which are flat plates with a stick in the middle. Sundials have been used for thousands of years.

03As the sun moves across the sky, the stick makes a shadow. The shadow slowly moves around the plate. In the northern half of the world, this shadow moves in the direction we now call clockwise.

04Most early clock makers lived in the northern half of the world, in places like Europe. They were used to watching shadows move that way on sundials. So they made their new clocks copy the same motion.

05It is interesting to imagine another world. If clocks had been invented south of the equator, shadows there turn the other way. Our clocks might have run "backwards" instead.

06So clockwise is not a law of nature. It is a habit, frozen in time, copied from the moving shadow of an ancient sundial. A small choice, long ago, still rules our clocks today. We simply never questioned it.

これも一度広まると変えにくいpath dependence(経路依存)の一例。
