Robots are everywhere in our world. They build cars, clean floors, and explore space. The word "robot" feels very modern. But it is over a hundred years old, and it was not born in a science lab.
The word first appeared in 1920, in a play from a country then called Czechoslovakia. The writer was Karel Capek. His play told a dark story about machines made to work for humans.
Capek needed a name for these machines. His brother suggested a word based on "robota." In the old language, "robota" meant hard, forced labor, like the heavy work poor farmers once had to do.
So from the very start, the word "robot" carried the idea of a worker. In the play, the robots do all the boring and difficult jobs. They never rest and never complain. They obey every command without question.
The play became famous around the world. The word "robot" traveled into many languages, including English and Japanese. People loved the new word, even if they never saw the play. Today, almost every country in the world knows the word.
So a word we use for high technology actually came from art, and from an old word for hard work. The next time you see a robot, remember: its name means "the one who labors."

What did the original word "robota" mean?
"'robota' meant hard, forced labor, like the heavy work poor farmers once had to do."
Where did the word "robot" first appear?
"The word first appeared in 1920, in a play" が根拠。しかも "it was not born in a science lab" と冒頭で予告されています。
Who actually suggested the word to Capek?
"His brother suggested a word based on 'robota.'"
Why does the writer end with "its name means 'the one who labors'"?
"from the very start, the word 'robot' carried the idea of a worker" と呼応する締めです。

01Robots are everywhere in our world. They build cars, clean floors, and explore space. The word "robot" feels very modern. But it is over a hundred years old, and it was not born in a science lab.
02The word first appeared in 1920, in a play from a country then called Czechoslovakia. The writer was Karel Capek. His play told a dark story about machines made to work for humans.
03Capek needed a name for these machines. His brother suggested a word based on "robota." In the old language, "robota" meant hard, forced labor, like the heavy work poor farmers once had to do.
04So from the very start, the word "robot" carried the idea of a worker. In the play, the robots do all the boring and difficult jobs. They never rest and never complain. They obey every command without question.
05The play became famous around the world. The word "robot" traveled into many languages, including English and Japanese. People loved the new word, even if they never saw the play. Today, almost every country in the world knows the word.
06So a word we use for high technology actually came from art, and from an old word for hard work. The next time you see a robot, remember: its name means "the one who labors."
