You send a message to a friend, and it arrives in a second. The friend may be in another country, very far away. How does the message travel so far, so fast?
The secret is to break the message into pieces. The internet does not send your whole message as one big block. Instead, it cuts the message into many small parts called packets.
Each packet is like a small letter in an envelope. It has the address of where it is going. The packets then travel across the world through cables and signals, sometimes by different routes. Computers along the way pass each packet toward its goal.
The packets do not have to stay together. One packet might go one way, and another packet a different way. If one route is busy, packets simply take another. They can even arrive out of order. This makes the system fast and strong.
When the packets reach your friend's device, they are put back together in the right order. The whole message appears on the screen. Millions of packets move this way every second. All of this happens in less than a second.
Most of these signals travel through thin glass cables under the sea. So your simple "hello" may cross an entire ocean, in pieces, and arrive whole on the other side.

What does the internet do with your message before sending it?
"it cuts the message into many small parts called packets."
Why does splitting the message make the system strong?
"If one route is busy, packets simply take another. This makes the system fast and strong."
What happens when packets arrive out of order?
"they are put back together in the right order."
Where do most of these signals actually travel?
"Most of these signals travel through thin glass cables under the sea."

01You send a message to a friend, and it arrives in a second. The friend may be in another country, very far away. How does the message travel so far, so fast?
02The secret is to break the message into pieces. The internet does not send your whole message as one big block. Instead, it cuts the message into many small parts called packets.
03Each packet is like a small letter in an envelope. It has the address of where it is going. The packets then travel across the world through cables and signals, sometimes by different routes. Computers along the way pass each packet toward its goal.
04The packets do not have to stay together. One packet might go one way, and another packet a different way. If one route is busy, packets simply take another. They can even arrive out of order. This makes the system fast and strong.
05When the packets reach your friend's device, they are put back together in the right order. The whole message appears on the screen. Millions of packets move this way every second. All of this happens in less than a second.
06Most of these signals travel through thin glass cables under the sea. So your simple "hello" may cross an entire ocean, in pieces, and arrive whole on the other side.
