Many people love scary things. They watch horror movies, ride fast roller coasters, and visit haunted houses. Horror movies alone earn billions of dollars each year. But this is strange. Why would anyone pay money to feel afraid?

When we feel fear, the body gets ready for danger. The heart beats faster, and we breathe more quickly. The brain releases chemicals that make us feel awake and full of energy. This is called the "fight or flight" response.

Normally, these feelings warn us of real danger. But in a movie or a theme park, we know we are safe. Our fear is only pretend. So we get all the excitement of fear, without any real risk.

After the scary moment passes, we feel a wave of relief. The body calms down, and we feel happy and even proud. Some scientists call this a "safe scare." In one survey, most fans said they felt great afterward.

Being scared together is also fun. When friends scream and laugh at the same movie, they feel closer. Sharing fear, and then safety, can build strong bonds between people.

So liking scary things is not so strange after all. Our brains enjoy the thrill, as long as a part of us knows that, in the end, we are perfectly safe.

01Many people love scary things. They watch horror movies, ride fast roller coasters, and visit haunted houses. Horror movies alone earn billions of dollars each year. But this is strange. Why would anyone pay money to feel afraid?

02When we feel fear, the body gets ready for danger. The heart beats faster, and we breathe more quickly. The brain releases chemicals that make us feel awake and full of energy. This is called the "fight or flight" response.

03Normally, these feelings warn us of real danger. But in a movie or a theme park, we know we are safe. Our fear is only pretend. So we get all the excitement of fear, without any real risk.

04After the scary moment passes, we feel a wave of relief. The body calms down, and we feel happy and even proud. Some scientists call this a "safe scare." In one survey, most fans said they felt great afterward.

05Being scared together is also fun. When friends scream and laugh at the same movie, they feel closer. Sharing fear, and then safety, can build strong bonds between people.

06So liking scary things is not so strange after all. Our brains enjoy the thrill, as long as a part of us knows that, in the end, we are perfectly safe.
