The Great Wall of China is one of the largest things ever built by people. It runs across mountains and deserts for thousands of kilometers. But why did people build such a huge wall?
The main reason was protection. Long ago, China was often attacked by riders from the north. These fast horsemen could appear suddenly and steal from villages. China needed a way to stop them. Walls could slow the horses down and give time to react.
So, over many centuries, Chinese rulers built walls along the northern border. Different rulers built different parts. Later, they were joined together into one long wall. The whole wall stretches over 20,000 kilometers. Work continued, on and off, for almost 2,000 years.
The wall did more than block enemies. Soldiers stood in tall towers along the top. When they saw danger, they lit fires and made smoke. In this way, a warning could travel hundreds of kilometers very fast.
Building the wall was incredibly hard. Millions of workers carried heavy stones up steep hills. Many died during the long, dangerous work. The wall is sometimes called the longest cemetery on Earth.
Today, the Great Wall no longer guards the country. Instead, it welcomes millions of visitors. A wall once built to keep people out now invites the whole world in.

How did the wall help against attackers on horses?
"Walls could slow the horses down and give time to react."
How did a warning travel hundreds of kilometers quickly?
"they lit fires and made smoke. In this way, a warning could travel hundreds of kilometers very fast."
How long did work on the wall continue?
"Work continued, on and off, for almost 2,000 years."
What is the effect of the final sentence about keeping people out and inviting the world in?
keep people out ⇄ invites the world in

01The Great Wall of China is one of the largest things ever built by people. It runs across mountains and deserts for thousands of kilometers. But why did people build such a huge wall?
02The main reason was protection. Long ago, China was often attacked by riders from the north. These fast horsemen could appear suddenly and steal from villages. China needed a way to stop them. Walls could slow the horses down and give time to react.
03So, over many centuries, Chinese rulers built walls along the northern border. Different rulers built different parts. Later, they were joined together into one long wall. The whole wall stretches over 20,000 kilometers. Work continued, on and off, for almost 2,000 years.
04The wall did more than block enemies. Soldiers stood in tall towers along the top. When they saw danger, they lit fires and made smoke. In this way, a warning could travel hundreds of kilometers very fast.
05Building the wall was incredibly hard. Millions of workers carried heavy stones up steep hills. Many died during the long, dangerous work. The wall is sometimes called the longest cemetery on Earth.
06Today, the Great Wall no longer guards the country. Instead, it welcomes millions of visitors. A wall once built to keep people out now invites the whole world in.

「万里の長城は宇宙から肉眼で見える」という話は実はmyth(俗説)で、宇宙飛行士も否定しています。幅が狭く、肉眼ではまず見えないのです。世界遺産や歴史的建造物は、英検2級では説明文、準1級では観光と保存の議論として出ます。万里の長城は、どちらの級でも登場回数の多い題材です。「有名な通説が実は間違い」というパターンは、読解でも引っかけでよく使われますよ^^;
