How Dogs Smell the World

— What can a single sniff tell a dog? —

A dog meets the world mainly through its nose. Its nose is its most powerful tool. While we look around, a dog sniffs around. For a dog, a single smell can tell a whole story.

A dog's sense of smell is far stronger than ours. Humans have about 5 million smell receptors in the nose. A dog can have up to 300 million. Some experts say dogs smell tens of thousands of times better than we do.

Dogs also smell in a special way. They can breathe in and out at the same time, so the smell never stops. They can even tell which nostril a smell came from, helping them find its direction.

Because of this gift, dogs do amazing jobs. They help find lost people under snow or fallen buildings. Other dogs guide blind people safely through busy streets. Some dogs are trained to smell illness, like certain kinds of disease, before doctors can.

A smell can also tell a dog about time. An old, faint smell means another animal passed long ago. A strong, fresh smell means it was here just now. To a dog, the air is full of news.

So when your dog stops to sniff a tree, be patient. It is not wasting time. It is reading the daily newspaper of the neighborhood.

01A dog meets the world mainly through its nose. Its nose is its most powerful tool. While we look around, a dog sniffs around. For a dog, a single smell can tell a whole story.

02A dog's sense of smell is far stronger than ours. Humans have about 5 million smell receptors in the nose. A dog can have up to 300 million. Some experts say dogs smell tens of thousands of times better than we do.

03Dogs also smell in a special way. They can breathe in and out at the same time, so the smell never stops. They can even tell which nostril a smell came from, helping them find its direction.

04Because of this gift, dogs do amazing jobs. They help find lost people under snow or fallen buildings. Other dogs guide blind people safely through busy streets. Some dogs are trained to smell illness, like certain kinds of disease, before doctors can.

05A smell can also tell a dog about time. An old, faint smell means another animal passed long ago. A strong, fresh smell means it was here just now. To a dog, the air is full of news.

06So when your dog stops to sniff a tree, be patient. It is not wasting time. It is reading the daily newspaper of the neighborhood.
