Look at a calendar and you will see twelve month names. Some of them hide the stories of powerful men from long ago. Two months, July and August, are named after famous Roman leaders.
Long ago, the Roman calendar was a mess. The months did not match the seasons well. A great leader named Julius Caesar decided to fix it. In 46 BC, he created a new and better calendar. It was so good that we still use a form of it today.
To thank him, the Romans named a month after him. The month of his birth became "July," from his name Julius. It was a great honor for a single person.
After Julius came another powerful leader, his adopted son Augustus. Augustus was the first true emperor of Rome. He did not want to be forgotten. So the month after July was named "August," in his honor.
There is a famous old story about these months. People say August was given an extra day so it would not look shorter than July. Whether this is fully true, August does have 31 days, just like July.
So every summer, when you write the date, you are using the names of two Roman rulers. Their power faded long ago, but their names still live on in our calendar.

Why did Julius Caesar create a new calendar?
"the Roman calendar was a mess. The months did not match the seasons well."
How was July named?
"To thank him, the Romans named a month after him. The month of his birth became 'July'"
How does the writer treat the story about August's extra day?
"There is a famous old story... Whether this is fully true, August does have 31 days" ——確かなのは日数だけと切り分けています。
What does "Their power faded long ago, but their names still live on" emphasize?
power(消えたもの)とnames(残ったもの)の対比です。

01Look at a calendar and you will see twelve month names. Some of them hide the stories of powerful men from long ago. Two months, July and August, are named after famous Roman leaders.
02Long ago, the Roman calendar was a mess. The months did not match the seasons well. A great leader named Julius Caesar decided to fix it. In 46 BC, he created a new and better calendar. It was so good that we still use a form of it today.
03To thank him, the Romans named a month after him. The month of his birth became "July," from his name Julius. It was a great honor for a single person.
04After Julius came another powerful leader, his adopted son Augustus. Augustus was the first true emperor of Rome. He did not want to be forgotten. So the month after July was named "August," in his honor.
05There is a famous old story about these months. People say August was given an extra day so it would not look shorter than July. Whether this is fully true, August does have 31 days, just like July.
06So every summer, when you write the date, you are using the names of two Roman rulers. Their power faded long ago, but their names still live on in our calendar.

September(7番目)・October(8番目)・November(9番目)・December(10番目)——ラテン語の数詞から見ると、実際の月より2つずつずれています。
