On a sunny day, the sea often looks deep blue. Yet if you fill a glass with seawater, it looks clear. So where does all that blue color come from?
The answer is hidden in sunlight. Sunlight looks white, but it is really made of many colors mixed together. We can see these colors in a rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, and blue. There are seven colors in all.
When sunlight hits the sea, the water soaks up some of these colors. Water absorbs red, orange, and yellow light most easily. Red light disappears within the first ten meters of water. Blue light is different. It travels deeper and bounces back to our eyes.
This is why the sea looks blue, especially where it is deep. In a small glass, the water is too thin to absorb much light. But the deep sea holds enough water to absorb all but the blue. That is why a glass of seawater looks almost colorless.
The color can change, too. Near the shore, the sea may look green or brown. This happens when sand, mud, or tiny plants in the water mix with the light.
So the blue of the ocean is not really in the water itself. It is a gift from the sun, painted fresh on the waves every single day.

Why does a glass of seawater look almost colorless?
"In a small glass, the water is too thin to absorb much light."
Which colors does water absorb most easily?
"Water absorbs red, orange, and yellow light most easily."
What happens to red light within the first ten meters?
"Red light disappears within the first ten meters of water."
Why can the sea look green or brown near the shore?
"This happens when sand, mud, or tiny plants in the water mix with the light."

01On a sunny day, the sea often looks deep blue. Yet if you fill a glass with seawater, it looks clear. So where does all that blue color come from?
02The answer is hidden in sunlight. Sunlight looks white, but it is really made of many colors mixed together. We can see these colors in a rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, and blue. There are seven colors in all.
03When sunlight hits the sea, the water soaks up some of these colors. Water absorbs red, orange, and yellow light most easily. Red light disappears within the first ten meters of water. Blue light is different. It travels deeper and bounces back to our eyes.
04This is why the sea looks blue, especially where it is deep. In a small glass, the water is too thin to absorb much light. But the deep sea holds enough water to absorb all but the blue. That is why a glass of seawater looks almost colorless.
05The color can change, too. Near the shore, the sea may look green or brown. This happens when sand, mud, or tiny plants in the water mix with the light.
06So the blue of the ocean is not really in the water itself. It is a gift from the sun, painted fresh on the waves every single day.

白い光が虹の七色に分かれる現象をdispersion(分散)、特定の色を吸い取るのを absorption(吸収)と呼びます。
