Pick up a banana in any shop, in almost any country. It will look and taste nearly the same as every other banana. This is stranger than it sounds. Most bananas in the world are copies of one another.
The banana we eat is called the Cavendish. Farmers do not grow it from seeds. Instead, they cut a piece from one plant and grow a new plant from it. So the new banana is a clone, exactly like its parent.
Because they are all the same, every Cavendish banana shares the same taste. But there is a big danger in this. If a disease can kill one banana plant, it can kill them all. There is no variety to fight it off.
This has happened before. Until the 1950s, people ate a different banana called the Gros Michel. Many said it was sweeter than today's banana. Then a disease spread and almost wiped it out. It had been the world's main banana for over 50 years.
Now the same thing is threatening the Cavendish. A new disease is spreading through banana farms around the world. Scientists are working hard to save our favorite fruit.
So the next time you eat a banana, enjoy it and think for a moment. The fruit in your hand is a clone, and its future may be less safe than it looks.

Why do almost all bananas taste the same?
"they cut a piece from one plant and grow a new plant from it. So the new banana is a clone" が根拠。
Why is being clones dangerous for bananas?
"There is no variety to fight it off."
What happened to the Gros Michel banana?
"Then a disease spread and almost wiped it out." しかも "Many said it was sweeter than today's banana"——味で負けたのではなく、病気で消えた。
Why does the writer describe the same thing happening again now?
"Now the same thing is threatening the Cavendish."

01Pick up a banana in any shop, in almost any country. It will look and taste nearly the same as every other banana. This is stranger than it sounds. Most bananas in the world are copies of one another.
02The banana we eat is called the Cavendish. Farmers do not grow it from seeds. Instead, they cut a piece from one plant and grow a new plant from it. So the new banana is a clone, exactly like its parent.
03Because they are all the same, every Cavendish banana shares the same taste. But there is a big danger in this. If a disease can kill one banana plant, it can kill them all. There is no variety to fight it off.
04This has happened before. Until the 1950s, people ate a different banana called the Gros Michel. Many said it was sweeter than today's banana. Then a disease spread and almost wiped it out. It had been the world's main banana for over 50 years.
05Now the same thing is threatening the Cavendish. A new disease is spreading through banana farms around the world. Scientists are working hard to save our favorite fruit.
06So the next time you eat a banana, enjoy it and think for a moment. The fruit in your hand is a clone, and its future may be less safe than it looks.
