In the Italian city of Pisa stands one of the most famous towers in the world. It is famous for one strange reason: it leans to one side. But the builders never planned this at all.

Work on the tower began in 1173. It was meant to be a tall, straight bell tower for a church. But there was a hidden problem deep in the ground below it.

The soft, wet soil under the tower was not strong enough. As the heavy tower grew taller, one side slowly began to sink. The ground simply could not hold its great weight. Even before it was finished, the tower had started to lean.

Building stopped for almost a hundred years because of wars. This long break may have saved the tower. The soil had time to settle, so the tower did not simply fall over.

When work continued, the builders tried to fix the lean. They made the upper floors slightly taller on the low side. This is why the tower is not only leaning but also a little curved like a banana.

Today, engineers have made the tower safer, and it still stands after more than 800 years. It leans by about four meters at the top. A famous mistake has become a treasure that millions of people travel to see.

01In the Italian city of Pisa stands one of the most famous towers in the world. It is famous for one strange reason: it leans to one side. But the builders never planned this at all.

02Work on the tower began in 1173. It was meant to be a tall, straight bell tower for a church. But there was a hidden problem deep in the ground below it.

03The soft, wet soil under the tower was not strong enough. As the heavy tower grew taller, one side slowly began to sink. The ground simply could not hold its great weight. Even before it was finished, the tower had started to lean.

04Building stopped for almost a hundred years because of wars. This long break may have saved the tower. The soil had time to settle, so the tower did not simply fall over.

05When work continued, the builders tried to fix the lean. They made the upper floors slightly taller on the low side. This is why the tower is not only leaning but also a little curved like a banana.

06Today, engineers have made the tower safer, and it still stands after more than 800 years. It leans by about four meters at the top. A famous mistake has become a treasure that millions of people travel to see.
