Owls are amazing night hunters. If you watch one, you may see something spooky. It can turn its head almost all the way around to look behind itself. How is this possible?

There is a simple reason owls must do this. Unlike us, an owl cannot move its eyes. Its big eyes are fixed in place, pointing straight ahead. To look to the side, it has to turn its whole head.

An owl can turn its head about 270 degrees. That is three quarters of a full circle. If a human tried this, it would badly hurt the neck and stop the blood to the brain.

So how does the owl stay safe? Its body has special features. Owls have extra bones in their necks, more than twice as many as humans. Their blood vessels are also built to keep blood flowing, even when the neck is fully turned.

These tricks let the owl look all around without moving its body. This is very useful for a quiet hunter. It can watch for a mouse without making a single sound. Then it can attack at the perfect moment.

So the owl's spooky head turn is really clever design. Nature gave this bird a safe way to see the whole world around it, one silent turn at a time.

01Owls are amazing night hunters. If you watch one, you may see something spooky. It can turn its head almost all the way around to look behind itself. How is this possible?

02There is a simple reason owls must do this. Unlike us, an owl cannot move its eyes. Its big eyes are fixed in place, pointing straight ahead. To look to the side, it has to turn its whole head.

03An owl can turn its head about 270 degrees. That is three quarters of a full circle. If a human tried this, it would badly hurt the neck and stop the blood to the brain.

04So how does the owl stay safe? Its body has special features. Owls have extra bones in their necks, more than twice as many as humans. Their blood vessels are also built to keep blood flowing, even when the neck is fully turned.

05These tricks let the owl look all around without moving its body. This is very useful for a quiet hunter. It can watch for a mouse without making a single sound. Then it can attack at the perfect moment.

06So the owl's spooky head turn is really clever design. Nature gave this bird a safe way to see the whole world around it, one silent turn at a time.

  • all the way around
