— What makes that funny little sound? —

You eat too fast, and suddenly it happens. "Hic! Hic!" You cannot stop it. Everyone gets hiccups, even babies before they are born. But what causes this strange little sound?

Under your lungs is a big muscle called the diaphragm. It helps you breathe. It sits just below your chest. Normally it moves smoothly, up and down, all day long. You never even notice it.

Sometimes this muscle jumps suddenly. When it does, you take in a quick breath of air. At the same moment, a small part of your throat snaps shut. That fast closing makes the "hic" sound.

Many things can start hiccups. Eating too fast, drinking fizzy drinks, or feeling excited can all do it. Most hiccups are harmless and stop after a few minutes. But in very rare cases, they last much longer. One man hiccupped for 68 years.

People have invented many cures. Some hold their breath. Others drink water upside down or eat a spoon of sugar. There is little science behind these tricks, but sometimes they seem to help.

Scientists are still not fully sure why we hiccup at all. One idea is that it is left over from very early life, when our distant ancestors lived in water. So your hiccup may be a tiny echo of the past.

01You eat too fast, and suddenly it happens. "Hic! Hic!" You cannot stop it. Everyone gets hiccups, even babies before they are born. But what causes this strange little sound?

02Under your lungs is a big muscle called the diaphragm. It helps you breathe. It sits just below your chest. Normally it moves smoothly, up and down, all day long. You never even notice it.

03Sometimes this muscle jumps suddenly. When it does, you take in a quick breath of air. At the same moment, a small part of your throat snaps shut. That fast closing makes the "hic" sound.

04Many things can start hiccups. Eating too fast, drinking fizzy drinks, or feeling excited can all do it. Most hiccups are harmless and stop after a few minutes. But in very rare cases, they last much longer. One man hiccupped for 68 years.

05People have invented many cures. Some hold their breath. Others drink water upside down or eat a spoon of sugar. There is little science behind these tricks, but sometimes they seem to help.

06Scientists are still not fully sure why we hiccup at all. One idea is that it is left over from very early life, when our distant ancestors lived in water. So your hiccup may be a tiny echo of the past.
