— Are the stars really blinking? —

On a clear night, the stars seem to twinkle. They look like tiny lights blinking on and off. It is a beautiful sight. But the stars are not really flashing at all.

A star sends out a steady light. A star's light can take hundreds of years to reach us. By the time it arrives, it is a thin, straight beam coming down toward the Earth. The nearest star besides the Sun is over four light-years away.

Then the light meets our atmosphere, the layer of air around the planet. The air is always moving. There are warm parts and cool parts, and they bend the light in different ways.

As the air moves, the star's light is bent this way and that. To our eyes, the point of light seems to shake and change. We see this shaking as twinkling.

Here is a clue you can test yourself. Planets usually do not twinkle as much as stars. They are closer, so they look like small disks, and their light is steadier through the moving air. This is one easy way to tell them apart.

So the twinkling is not really about the stars. It is about our restless sky. The next time a star seems to wink at you, it is really the air, dancing between you and space.

01On a clear night, the stars seem to twinkle. They look like tiny lights blinking on and off. It is a beautiful sight. But the stars are not really flashing at all.

02A star sends out a steady light. A star's light can take hundreds of years to reach us. By the time it arrives, it is a thin, straight beam coming down toward the Earth. The nearest star besides the Sun is over four light-years away.

03Then the light meets our atmosphere, the layer of air around the planet. The air is always moving. There are warm parts and cool parts, and they bend the light in different ways.

04As the air moves, the star's light is bent this way and that. To our eyes, the point of light seems to shake and change. We see this shaking as twinkling.

05Here is a clue you can test yourself. Planets usually do not twinkle as much as stars. They are closer, so they look like small disks, and their light is steadier through the moving air. This is one easy way to tell them apart.

06So the twinkling is not really about the stars. It is about our restless sky. The next time a star seems to wink at you, it is really the air, dancing between you and space.

  • this way and that
  • tell A and B apart AとBを見分ける tell apart で「区別する」。
