Under the warm, clear sea, coral reefs look like colorful gardens. Many people think coral is a kind of plant or rock. But coral is actually made of tiny living animals.

These little animals are called polyps. Each polyp is often smaller than your fingernail. They build hard shells around themselves. Over hundreds of years, millions of these shells grow together. Slowly, they form the huge reefs we see today.

Coral reefs are very important for the sea. They cover only a small part of the ocean floor. Yet about a quarter of all sea animals depend on them for food and shelter. The largest reef, near Australia, can even be seen from space.

Reefs help people too. They protect coastlines by breaking strong waves before they reach the land. They also bring tourists and fish that feed millions of families around the world.

Sadly, coral reefs are in danger. When the sea grows too warm, coral turns white and can die. This is called bleaching. Pollution and plastic in the water hurt the reefs as well. Scientists say we have already lost a large part of the world's reefs.

So coral reefs are not just pretty. They are living cities of the sea, and they need our care. Protecting them means protecting countless other lives, including our own.

01Under the warm, clear sea, coral reefs look like colorful gardens. Many people think coral is a kind of plant or rock. But coral is actually made of tiny living animals.

02These little animals are called polyps. Each polyp is often smaller than your fingernail. They build hard shells around themselves. Over hundreds of years, millions of these shells grow together. Slowly, they form the huge reefs we see today.

03Coral reefs are very important for the sea. They cover only a small part of the ocean floor. Yet about a quarter of all sea animals depend on them for food and shelter. The largest reef, near Australia, can even be seen from space.

04Reefs help people too. They protect coastlines by breaking strong waves before they reach the land. They also bring tourists and fish that feed millions of families around the world.

05Sadly, coral reefs are in danger. When the sea grows too warm, coral turns white and can die. This is called bleaching. Pollution and plastic in the water hurt the reefs as well. Scientists say we have already lost a large part of the world's reefs.

06So coral reefs are not just pretty. They are living cities of the sea, and they need our care. Protecting them means protecting countless other lives, including our own.
