Your phone can show your exact spot on a map. It can guide you to a new place, step by step. This amazing help comes from a system called GPS. But how does it really work?

High above the Earth, there are special satellites. About 30 of them circle the planet all the time. They fly about 20,000 kilometers up in space. Each one sends out a radio signal that says where it is and what time it is.

Your phone listens to these signals. A signal takes a tiny moment to travel from a satellite to your phone. By measuring this time, the phone can work out how far away each satellite is. Their clocks must be extremely accurate.

To find your spot, the phone needs at least four satellites. Using their distances, it can calculate your position on the ground. It does this math many times every second, so the map can follow you as you move.

GPS was first built by the army many years ago. Later, it was opened for everyone to use. Now it guides cars, ships, planes, and even hikers lost in the mountains.

So the next time your phone shows a blue dot, look up. Far above you, a group of satellites is quietly helping you find your way.

01Your phone can show your exact spot on a map. It can guide you to a new place, step by step. This amazing help comes from a system called GPS. But how does it really work?

02High above the Earth, there are special satellites. About 30 of them circle the planet all the time. They fly about 20,000 kilometers up in space. Each one sends out a radio signal that says where it is and what time it is.

03Your phone listens to these signals. A signal takes a tiny moment to travel from a satellite to your phone. By measuring this time, the phone can work out how far away each satellite is. Their clocks must be extremely accurate.

04To find your spot, the phone needs at least four satellites. Using their distances, it can calculate your position on the ground. It does this math many times every second, so the map can follow you as you move.

05GPS was first built by the army many years ago. Later, it was opened for everyone to use. Now it guides cars, ships, planes, and even hikers lost in the mountains.

06So the next time your phone shows a blue dot, look up. Far above you, a group of satellites is quietly helping you find your way.
