— What is really inside the hump? —

The desert is one of the hardest places to live. It is burning hot in the day and cold at night. There is little water for weeks. Yet one animal crosses it with ease: the camel.

Many people believe a camel stores water in its hump. This is not true. The hump is actually full of fat. When food is hard to find, the camel's body uses this fat for energy.

Camels save water in clever ways. They hardly sweat, even in great heat. They can also lose a lot of body water without getting sick. It can go for over a week without any water at all. A thirsty camel can then drink over 100 liters in only a few minutes.

Their bodies have other tricks too. Long eyelashes keep sand out of their eyes. They can close their noses to stop blowing sand. Their wide feet do not sink into the soft desert ground.

Because of all this, camels have helped people for thousands of years. Traders crossed huge deserts on their backs, carrying salt, cloth, and other goods between distant towns. These long journeys were called caravans.

So the camel is not just a funny-looking animal. It is a perfect desert traveler, shaped by nature to live where almost nothing else can.

01The desert is one of the hardest places to live. It is burning hot in the day and cold at night. There is little water for weeks. Yet one animal crosses it with ease: the camel.

02Many people believe a camel stores water in its hump. This is not true. The hump is actually full of fat. When food is hard to find, the camel's body uses this fat for energy.

03Camels save water in clever ways. They hardly sweat, even in great heat. They can also lose a lot of body water without getting sick. It can go for over a week without any water at all. A thirsty camel can then drink over 100 liters in only a few minutes.

04Their bodies have other tricks too. Long eyelashes keep sand out of their eyes. They can close their noses to stop blowing sand. Their wide feet do not sink into the soft desert ground.

05Because of all this, camels have helped people for thousands of years. Traders crossed huge deserts on their backs, carrying salt, cloth, and other goods between distant towns. These long journeys were called caravans.

06So the camel is not just a funny-looking animal. It is a perfect desert traveler, shaped by nature to live where almost nothing else can.
