During an illness, you may hear the word "quarantine." It means keeping sick people away from others to stop a disease from spreading. But this old word hides a surprising number inside it.

The story begins in Italy in the 1300s. A terrible disease was killing people across Europe. People called this disease the Black Death. Cities by the sea were afraid of ships that might carry the sickness from far away.

The city of Venice made a strict rule. Ships arriving from dangerous places had to wait before anyone could come ashore. They had to stay on the water for a set number of days.

At first the wait was thirty days. Later, leaders made it forty days. The Italian word for forty is "quaranta." So the forty-day wait was called "quarantena." From this, we get the English word "quarantine."

No one is fully sure why they chose forty days. Some say it was a number with special meaning. Others think forty days was simply long enough to see if the sailors became sick. Either way, the idea worked: waiting helped stop the disease from spreading.

So the next time you hear "quarantine," remember the ships of Venice. A word we use today still carries the number forty, hidden inside it from 700 years ago.

日本語訳(段落ごとの対訳)

01During an illness, you may hear the word "quarantine." It means keeping sick people away from others to stop a disease from spreading. But this old word hides a surprising number inside it.

病気がはやっているとき、「quarantine(検疫・隔離)」という言葉を耳にするかもしれません。病気が広がるのを防ぐため、病人をほかの人から遠ざけることを意味します。でも、この古い言葉には、意外な「数字」が隠れているのです。

02The story begins in Italy in the 1300s. A terrible disease was killing people across Europe. People called this disease the Black Death. Cities by the sea were afraid of ships that might carry the sickness from far away.

物語は、1300年代のイタリアから始まります。恐ろしい病気が、ヨーロッパじゅうの人々の命を奪っていました。人々はこの病気を「黒死病」と呼びました。海に面した街は、遠くから病気を運んでくるかもしれない船を恐れたのです。

03The city of Venice made a strict rule. Ships arriving from dangerous places had to wait before anyone could come ashore. They had to stay on the water for a set number of days.

ベネチアの街は、厳しいルールを作りました。危険な土地から来た船は、誰かが上陸する前に待たなければなりません。決められた日数のあいだ、海の上にとどまる必要があったのです。

04At first the wait was thirty days. Later, leaders made it forty days. The Italian word for forty is "quaranta." So the forty-day wait was called "quarantena." From this, we get the English word "quarantine."

最初、その待機期間は30日でした。のちに、指導者たちはそれを40日にします。イタリア語で40は「quaranta(クアランタ)」。だから40日間の待機は「quarantena」と呼ばれました。ここから、英語の「quarantine」が生まれたのです。

05No one is fully sure why they chose forty days. Some say it was a number with special meaning. Others think forty days was simply long enough to see if the sailors became sick. Either way, the idea worked: waiting helped stop the disease from spreading.

なぜ40日を選んだのか、本当のところは誰にも分かりません。特別な意味を持つ数字だったと言う人もいます。船乗りが病気になるか見極めるのに、ちょうどよい長さだったと考える人もいます。いずれにせよ、この方法は効きました——待つことが、病気の広がりを抑える助けになったのです。

06So the next time you hear "quarantine," remember the ships of Venice. A word we use today still carries the number forty, hidden inside it from 700 years ago.

だから次に「quarantine」と聞いたら、ベネチアの船を思い出してください。今も使われるこの言葉は、700年前から「40」という数字を、その中にひそかに抱え続けているのですから。

目から鱗の豆知識

へえ!

数字が言葉の中に隠れている例は意外と多く、quarantine(40)のほか、decade(10年)、century(100年)、quartet(4人組)などラテン語の数詞が元になっています。

ちなみに30日版は trentina(trenta=30)と呼ばれていました。もしこちらが定着していたら、私たちは今ごろ「トレンティン中です」と言っていたかもしれません^^
