Have you ever swum in the sea and tasted the water by accident? It is very salty. Rivers and lakes are not salty like this. So why is the ocean so full of salt?
The salt comes mostly from the land. Rainwater is a little bit acidic. As it falls on rocks, it slowly breaks tiny pieces of minerals away. Rivers then carry these minerals down to the sea.
One of these minerals is salt. Each river brings only a small amount. But rivers have been doing this for billions of years. If all the ocean's salt were spread on land, it would form a layer over 150 meters deep. Over such a long time, a huge amount of salt has collected in the ocean.
Here is the key point. When seawater dries up in the sun, the water leaves but the salt stays behind. Rivers keep adding more, and the salt cannot escape. So the ocean grows saltier and saltier.
Some seas are much saltier than others. The Dead Sea is so salty that people can float on it easily. Almost nothing can live in its water, which is why it has such a name.
So the next time you taste the sea, remember its long story. You are tasting minerals washed from mountains and rivers over millions and millions of years.

Why does the ocean keep getting saltier?
"the water leaves but the salt stays behind. Rivers keep adding more, and the salt cannot escape."
Why is rainwater able to break minerals away from rocks?
"Rainwater is a little bit acidic."
What does the "150 meters deep" figure describe?
"If all the ocean's salt were spread on land, it would form a layer over 150 meters deep."
Why is the Dead Sea called by that name?
"Almost nothing can live in its water, which is why it has such a name." which is why=だからこそ〜なのだ。

01Have you ever swum in the sea and tasted the water by accident? It is very salty. Rivers and lakes are not salty like this. So why is the ocean so full of salt?
02The salt comes mostly from the land. Rainwater is a little bit acidic. As it falls on rocks, it slowly breaks tiny pieces of minerals away. Rivers then carry these minerals down to the sea.
03One of these minerals is salt. Each river brings only a small amount. But rivers have been doing this for billions of years. If all the ocean's salt were spread on land, it would form a layer over 150 meters deep. Over such a long time, a huge amount of salt has collected in the ocean.
04Here is the key point. When seawater dries up in the sun, the water leaves but the salt stays behind. Rivers keep adding more, and the salt cannot escape. So the ocean grows saltier and saltier.
05Some seas are much saltier than others. The Dead Sea is so salty that people can float on it easily. Almost nothing can live in its water, which is why it has such a name.
06So the next time you taste the sea, remember its long story. You are tasting minerals washed from mountains and rivers over millions and millions of years.
