On a hot summer day, ice cream is an easy treat. We can buy it at any shop for a small price. But long ago, ice cream was a luxury that only kings and queens could enjoy.
The reason was simple: ice. Before freezers were invented, ice was very hard to get in summer. People had to cut it from frozen lakes in winter and store it in deep, cold rooms. In some cities, blocks of ice were worth more than gold. Only rich and powerful people could afford this.
Some emperors loved cold sweets. About 2,000 years ago, a Roman emperor is said to have sent runners into the mountains. They brought back snow, which was mixed with honey and fruit. It was a very expensive dessert.
In China, people learned to make icy treats with milk many centuries ago. Slowly, the idea spread to other lands. Recipes traveled to Europe, where cooks made the dish richer and sweeter.
Everything changed in the 1800s. New machines could make and store ice cheaply. Ice cream factories opened, and prices dropped. For the first time, ordinary families could enjoy this once-royal treat.
So the next time you hold a cold cone, smile. You are enjoying something that was once served only to emperors. A royal luxury is now a simple joy for everyone.

Why was ice cream once only for the rich?
"The reason was simple: ice."
What does "blocks of ice were worth more than gold" show?
What finally made ice cream affordable for ordinary families?
"New machines could make and store ice cheaply. Ice cream factories opened, and prices dropped."
How does the writer describe the Roman emperor's dessert?
"a Roman emperor is said to have sent runners into the mountains" ——be said to(〜だと言われている)は伝聞の型。

01On a hot summer day, ice cream is an easy treat. We can buy it at any shop for a small price. But long ago, ice cream was a luxury that only kings and queens could enjoy.
02The reason was simple: ice. Before freezers were invented, ice was very hard to get in summer. People had to cut it from frozen lakes in winter and store it in deep, cold rooms. In some cities, blocks of ice were worth more than gold. Only rich and powerful people could afford this.
03Some emperors loved cold sweets. About 2,000 years ago, a Roman emperor is said to have sent runners into the mountains. They brought back snow, which was mixed with honey and fruit. It was a very expensive dessert.

「かつての贅沢品が技術で大衆化する」流れをdemocratization(民主化・大衆化)と呼びます。
