Why the Moon Looks Bigger Near the Horizon

— Is your brain telling you a lie? —

Have you ever seen a full moon rising over the hills? Near the horizon, it can look huge and orange. But high in the night sky, the same moon looks small. Why does this happen?

The first surprise is this: the moon does not really change size. If you measured it with a camera, the moon near the horizon and the moon high above would be exactly the same. Our eyes are being tricked.

This trick is called the "moon illusion." People have noticed it for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks wrote about it more than 2,000 years ago. But scientists still argue about the real reason.

One popular idea is about objects on the ground. When the moon is near the horizon, we see it next to trees, houses, and hills. Our brain compares the moon to these things and thinks it must be very big and close.

When the moon is high in the sky, there is nothing to compare it with. It floats alone in the dark, so our brain decides it is smaller and far away. The size is the same, but the feeling is different.

So the next time the moon looks enormous over the hills, take a photo. You will see that your own brain wrote a beautiful little lie across the night sky.

01Have you ever seen a full moon rising over the hills? Near the horizon, it can look huge and orange. But high in the night sky, the same moon looks small. Why does this happen?

02The first surprise is this: the moon does not really change size. If you measured it with a camera, the moon near the horizon and the moon high above would be exactly the same. Our eyes are being tricked.

03This trick is called the "moon illusion." People have noticed it for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks wrote about it more than 2,000 years ago. But scientists still argue about the real reason.

04One popular idea is about objects on the ground. When the moon is near the horizon, we see it next to trees, houses, and hills. Our brain compares the moon to these things and thinks it must be very big and close.

05When the moon is high in the sky, there is nothing to compare it with. It floats alone in the dark, so our brain decides it is smaller and far away. The size is the same, but the feeling is different.

06So the next time the moon looks enormous over the hills, take a photo. You will see that your own brain wrote a beautiful little lie across the night sky.

  • compare A to B AをBと比べる compare A with B もほぼ同義。
