Why Your Keyboard Starts with QWERTY

— Was it made to slow you down? —

Look at the keyboard on your phone or computer. The top row of letters starts with Q, W, E, R, T, Y. This strange order has a name: QWERTY. But why are the letters not in ABC order?

The answer goes back to the 1870s. An American named Christopher Sholes built one of the first useful typewriters. Early machines had a problem. When people typed too fast, the metal arms inside often got stuck together.

Sholes tried to solve this problem. He moved the most common letters away from each other. This made fast typing a little harder. With slower typing, the arms got stuck less often. The QWERTY layout was born.

Soon QWERTY became the standard. A big company started selling typewriters with this layout in 1873. Many people learned to type on these machines. Once millions of people knew QWERTY, it was very hard to change.

Later, people made faster layouts. One, called Dvorak, lets some people type more quickly. But QWERTY was already everywhere. Schools taught it, and few people wanted to learn a new system.

So the next time you type a message, remember this. Your modern phone still uses a layout designed to slow people down more than 150 years ago. Old habits really are hard to break.

01Look at the keyboard on your phone or computer. The top row of letters starts with Q, W, E, R, T, Y. This strange order has a name: QWERTY. But why are the letters not in ABC order?

02The answer goes back to the 1870s. An American named Christopher Sholes built one of the first useful typewriters. Early machines had a problem. When people typed too fast, the metal arms inside often got stuck together.

03Sholes tried to solve this problem. He moved the most common letters away from each other. This made fast typing a little harder. With slower typing, the arms got stuck less often. The QWERTY layout was born.

04Soon QWERTY became the standard. A big company started selling typewriters with this layout in 1873. Many people learned to type on these machines. Once millions of people knew QWERTY, it was very hard to change.

05Later, people made faster layouts. One, called Dvorak, lets some people type more quickly. But QWERTY was already everywhere. Schools taught it, and few people wanted to learn a new system.

06So the next time you type a message, remember this. Your modern phone still uses a layout designed to slow people down more than 150 years ago. Old habits really are hard to break.

Once millions knew it, ...
反対は form a habit
