Today, the potato is one of the most popular foods in the world. We eat it boiled, baked, and as French fries. But when potatoes first came to Europe, many people were afraid of them.
The potato came from South America. Farmers there had grown it for thousands of years. In the 1500s, Spanish ships carried the plant back to Europe. At first, Europeans did not know what to do with it.
People had many strange ideas about the potato. Some thought it was dirty because it grew underground. Others believed it could cause diseases. Because it was not in the Bible, a few even said it was an evil plant.
One man helped change their minds. In France, a scientist named Antoine Parmentier had eaten potatoes as a prisoner of war. He knew they were safe and healthy. So he made a clever plan to make them popular.
Parmentier planted a field of potatoes and put guards around it during the day. People thought the plants must be valuable. At night, the guards left, and curious villagers came to steal the potatoes. Soon everyone wanted to grow them.
So the next time you enjoy hot fries, remember the potato's hard journey. A food once feared as evil is now loved all around the world.

Which fear about the potato is NOT mentioned in the passage?
Why did Parmentier put guards around his potato field during the day?
"People thought the plants must be valuable. At night, the guards left..." ——
How did Parmentier know potatoes were safe?
"had eaten potatoes as a prisoner of war" が根拠。
What does the potato's story best illustrate?
"A food once feared as evil is now loved all around the world." once ~, now ...
