The Statue of Liberty stands tall in New York Harbor. Millions of people visit her every year. Many think she has always been American. But the statue was actually a gift from another country: France.

In the 1860s, some French people admired the United States. They liked its ideas about freedom. A French thinker suggested giving America a great statue as a sign of friendship between the two nations.

Building the statue was a huge job. A French sculptor named Bartholdi designed her. The famous engineer Gustave Eiffel, who later built the Eiffel Tower, helped make her strong inside. The statue is made of thin copper over an iron frame.

There was one problem: money. France paid for the statue, but America had to pay for the base. At first, it was hard to raise enough. A newspaper asked ordinary people to help, and thousands sent small amounts of money.

The statue was finished and given to America in 1886. She was shipped across the ocean in 350 pieces. Workers then put her together on a small island. At first she was a shiny brown, but the copper slowly turned green.

So the next time you see the Statue of Liberty, remember she was born from friendship. A gift from France still welcomes the world to America today.

01The Statue of Liberty stands tall in New York Harbor. Millions of people visit her every year. Many think she has always been American. But the statue was actually a gift from another country: France.

02In the 1860s, some French people admired the United States. They liked its ideas about freedom. A French thinker suggested giving America a great statue as a sign of friendship between the two nations.

03Building the statue was a huge job. A French sculptor named Bartholdi designed her. The famous engineer Gustave Eiffel, who later built the Eiffel Tower, helped make her strong inside. The statue is made of thin copper over an iron frame.

04There was one problem: money. France paid for the statue, but America had to pay for the base. At first, it was hard to raise enough. A newspaper asked ordinary people to help, and thousands sent small amounts of money.

05The statue was finished and given to America in 1886. She was shipped across the ocean in 350 pieces. Workers then put her together on a small island. At first she was a shiny brown, but the copper slowly turned green.

06So the next time you see the Statue of Liberty, remember she was born from friendship. A gift from France still welcomes the world to America today.
