"OK" may be the most useful word in the world. People say it in almost every country. It is short, easy, and everyone understands it. But where did this little word come from?
The story begins in the United States in 1839. At that time, some newspaper writers in Boston liked to make jokes. They wrote funny short forms of common phrases, often spelling the words wrong on purpose. Their strange spellings were a kind of word game.
One of these jokes was "OK," short for "oll korrect." This was a silly way to write "all correct." At first it was just a small joke in one newspaper. No one thought it would last.
Then something lucky happened. In 1840, a man named Martin Van Buren was running to become president again. His nickname was "Old Kinderhook," because of his hometown. His supporters formed "OK Clubs," and the word spread fast.
Soon "OK" was everywhere. The telegraph helped too. Down the wires, two letters were faster to tap than a long sentence. Workers could send "OK" quickly to say a message had arrived safely.
Today, people use "OK" in many languages, and even astronauts use it in space. So the next time you say "OK," remember: you are using a 180-year-old joke that traveled the whole world.

What was "OK" originally short for?
How did the 1840 election help the word spread?
"His supporters formed 'OK Clubs,' and the word spread fast."
Why was "OK" useful for telegraph workers?
"two letters were faster to tap than a long sentence" が根拠。
What is the main idea of this passage?

ギリシャ語の ola kala(すべて良し)、西アフリカのウォロフ語 waw kay、ドイツ語の ohne Korrektur(訂正なし)、南北戦争の 0 killed(戦死者ゼロ)……。
