— Can you judge a person before they speak? —

Imagine you meet someone new at a party. Before you even speak, your brain is already busy. In just a few seconds, you form a first impression of that person.
Scientists have studied how fast this happens. In some experiments, people saw a stranger's face for only one tenth of a second. Even in that short time, they decided if the person looked kind, smart, or trustworthy. Other studies suggest we form a lasting opinion in about seven seconds.
Our brains do this to protect us. Long ago, humans had to judge quickly if a stranger was a friend or a danger. There was no time to think slowly. This fast judgement may have helped our ancestors stay alive.
But fast judgements are not always correct. We often trust people with friendly faces, even when we know nothing about them. We may also judge people unfairly because of how they look or dress.
The good news is that first impressions can change. When we spend more time with someone, our brain collects new information. A person who seemed cold at first may become a close friend later.
So remember two things. Your own first impression of others may be wrong. And others are judging you in seconds too. A warm smile in the first moment can open many doors.

In one experiment, how long did people need to judge a stranger's face?
"for only one tenth of a second" が根拠。
Why did humans develop the ability to judge others quickly?
"humans had to judge quickly if a stranger was a friend or a danger. There was no time to think slowly."
What problem with first impressions does the writer point out?
"We may also judge people unfairly because of how they look or dress."
Why does the writer end with "others are judging you in seconds too"?
"So remember two things"

01Imagine you meet someone new at a party. Before you even speak, your brain is already busy. In just a few seconds, you form a first impression of that person.
02Scientists have studied how fast this happens. In some experiments, people saw a stranger's face for only one tenth of a second. Even in that short time, they decided if the person looked kind, smart, or trustworthy. Other studies suggest we form a lasting opinion in about seven seconds.
03Our brains do this to protect us. Long ago, humans had to judge quickly if a stranger was a friend or a danger. There was no time to think slowly. This fast judgement may have helped our ancestors stay alive.
04But fast judgements are not always correct. We often trust people with friendly faces, even when we know nothing about them. We may also judge people unfairly because of how they look or dress.
05The good news is that first impressions can change. When we spend more time with someone, our brain collects new information. A person who seemed cold at first may become a close friend later.
06So remember two things. Your own first impression of others may be wrong. And others are judging you in seconds too. A warm smile in the first moment can open many doors.
