Every year, a group of researchers asks people around the world a simple question: How happy are you with your life? They use the answers to make the World Happiness Report. They have made this report every year since 2012.

One country comes first again and again. That country is Finland, a cold land in northern Europe. Finland has been named the happiest country in the world for seven years in a row.

This may sound strange. Finland has long, dark winters, and the sun hardly shines for weeks. So why are the Finns so happy? The answer is not about money or warm weather.

One reason is trust. People in Finland trust each other and their government. If you lose your wallet in Helsinki, there is a good chance someone will return it. Schools and hospitals are free for everyone, so people worry less.

Another reason is a special idea called "sisu." Sisu means quiet strength and the will to keep going, even in hard times. Finns also love nature. Many spend weekends in forests or relax in a warm sauna.

So happiness may not come from sunshine or riches. It may come from trust, calm, and time in nature. The next time you feel down, maybe a quiet walk in the woods is all you need.

01Every year, a group of researchers asks people around the world a simple question: How happy are you with your life? They use the answers to make the World Happiness Report. They have made this report every year since 2012.

02One country comes first again and again. That country is Finland, a cold land in northern Europe. Finland has been named the happiest country in the world for seven years in a row.

03This may sound strange. Finland has long, dark winters, and the sun hardly shines for weeks. So why are the Finns so happy? The answer is not about money or warm weather.

04One reason is trust. People in Finland trust each other and their government. If you lose your wallet in Helsinki, there is a good chance someone will return it. Schools and hospitals are free for everyone, so people worry less.

05Another reason is a special idea called "sisu." Sisu means quiet strength and the will to keep going, even in hard times. Finns also love nature. Many spend weekends in forests or relax in a warm sauna.

06So happiness may not come from sunshine or riches. It may come from trust, calm, and time in nature. The next time you feel down, maybe a quiet walk in the woods is all you need.

  • in a row 連続して seven years in a row(7年連続)。
  • there is a good chance (that) ~ 〜する可能性が高い 確率を柔らかく言う定番表現
