Why Ice Floats on Water

— A quiet secret that protects life —

Pour some water into a glass and drop in a few ice cubes. The ice floats on top. This looks normal to us. But for scientists, it is one of the strangest things in nature.

Most things become heavier and smaller when they get cold. Their tiny parts move closer together. So the solid form usually sinks in the liquid form. Water is special. It does the opposite.

When water cools, it gets heavier until about 4 degrees Celsius. After that, something surprising happens. As it freezes into ice, the water molecules form a wide, open pattern. This makes ice about 9 percent lighter than liquid water. So ice rises to the top.

This strange habit of water saves many lives. In winter, a lake freezes from the surface down. The layer of ice on top acts like a warm blanket. It keeps the water below from freezing. Fish and other animals can survive the cold months under the ice.

If ice sank instead, lakes would freeze from the bottom up. Many rivers and seas might turn into solid ice. Life in the water would be in great danger.

So the next time you see ice cubes floating in your drink, remember this. That simple sight is one of the quiet reasons life on Earth can exist.

01Pour some water into a glass and drop in a few ice cubes. The ice floats on top. This looks normal to us. But for scientists, it is one of the strangest things in nature.

02Most things become heavier and smaller when they get cold. Their tiny parts move closer together. So the solid form usually sinks in the liquid form. Water is special. It does the opposite.

03When water cools, it gets heavier until about 4 degrees Celsius. After that, something surprising happens. As it freezes into ice, the water molecules form a wide, open pattern. This makes ice about 9 percent lighter than liquid water. So ice rises to the top.

04This strange habit of water saves many lives. In winter, a lake freezes from the surface down. The layer of ice on top acts like a warm blanket. It keeps the water below from freezing. Fish and other animals can survive the cold months under the ice.

05If ice sank instead, lakes would freeze from the bottom up. Many rivers and seas might turn into solid ice. Life in the water would be in great danger.

06So the next time you see ice cubes floating in your drink, remember this. That simple sight is one of the quiet reasons life on Earth can exist.

  • the opposite 正反対(のこと) do the opposite で「逆のことをする」
  • act like ~ 〜のように働く acts like a warm blanket のような比喩に使う
  • from the bottom up 下から上へ 反対は from the top down。
