Have you ever used Velcro? It is the tape on shoes and bags that makes a loud sound when you pull it open. But did you know this useful invention came from a walk in the woods?
In 1941, a Swiss engineer named George de Mestral took his dog for a walk in the mountains. When he came home, he found many small burrs stuck to his clothes and to his dog's fur. These burrs would not come off easily.
Most people would just feel annoyed and throw them away. But George was curious. He looked at the burrs under a microscope. He saw that each burr was covered with tiny hooks. These hooks caught the soft loops in cloth and fur, like thousands of little hands.
George had a clever idea. What if he could copy this design? He worked for about ten years to make a new kind of fastener. It was not easy, and many people laughed at him. Finally, in 1955, he created Velcro. The name comes from two French words, "velours" and "crochet."
Today, Velcro is used everywhere, even by astronauts in space. Copying clever ideas from nature is now called "biomimicry."
So next time you hear that loud "rip" sound, remember a curious man and his dog from 1941. A great idea can be hiding right on your clothes.

What made de Mestral different from most people who get burrs on their clothes?
"Most people would just feel annoyed and throw them away. But George was curious." ——
What did he see through the microscope?
"each burr was covered with tiny hooks. These hooks caught the soft loops in cloth" ——hook and loop(かぎ状とループ状)の組み合わせが、そのままマジックテープの原理になっています。
About how many years passed between the dog walk and the finished invention?
本文も "He worked for about ten years" と書いています。
What does "biomimicry" mean here?
"Copying clever ideas from nature is now called 'biomimicry.'" bio(生物)+mimicry(模倣)と分解できると、初見でも意味の見当がつきます。

01Have you ever used Velcro? It is the tape on shoes and bags that makes a loud sound when you pull it open. But did you know this useful invention came from a walk in the woods?
02In 1941, a Swiss engineer named George de Mestral took his dog for a walk in the mountains. When he came home, he found many small burrs stuck to his clothes and to his dog's fur. These burrs would not come off easily.
03Most people would just feel annoyed and throw them away. But George was curious. He looked at the burrs under a microscope. He saw that each burr was covered with tiny hooks. These hooks caught the soft loops in cloth and fur, like thousands of little hands.
04George had a clever idea. What if he could copy this design? He worked for about ten years to make a new kind of fastener. It was not easy, and many people laughed at him. Finally, in 1955, he created Velcro. The name comes from two French words, "velours" and "crochet."
名前はフランス語の「velours(ビロード)」と「crochet(かぎ針)」を合わせたものでした。
05Today, Velcro is used everywhere, even by astronauts in space. Copying clever ideas from nature is now called "biomimicry."
06So next time you hear that loud "rip" sound, remember a curious man and his dog from 1941. A great idea can be hiding right on your clothes.
