Most birds look at us only as something big and dangerous. But crows are different. Scientists now know that crows can recognize individual human faces and remember them for many years. Even more surprising, they can teach this knowledge to their family members and friends.

A famous experiment was done at the University of Washington in the United States. Scientists wore strange masks while catching wild crows in nets. They quickly released the birds without hurting them. After that, every time someone walked through the same area wearing one of those masks, the crows shouted loudly and even dived at the person's head. People wearing different masks were left completely alone.

The most surprising part came later. Crows that had never been caught also started to attack the "dangerous" mask. The parent crows had told their babies and friends, "This face is bad." So the bird community shared the memory across generations, even years after the original event.

Crows have very large brains for their body size. They can use simple tools, solve puzzles, and even play games for fun. Their face recognition skill probably helps them survive in cities, where humans can be either kind or dangerous.

So if you ever feed a crow some bread in the park, that bird may remember your kind face for years. And if you ever throw a stone at a crow, well — its whole family may remember that, too, for a very long time. Be careful who watches you.

01Most birds look at us only as something big and dangerous. But crows are different. Scientists now know that crows can recognize individual human faces and remember them for many years. Even more surprising, they can teach this knowledge to their family members and friends.

02A famous experiment was done at the University of Washington in the United States. Scientists wore strange masks while catching wild crows in nets. They quickly released the birds without hurting them. After that, every time someone walked through the same area wearing one of those masks, the crows shouted loudly and even dived at the person's head. People wearing different masks were left completely alone.

03The most surprising part came later. Crows that had never been caught also started to attack the "dangerous" mask. The parent crows had told their babies and friends, "This face is bad." So the bird community shared the memory across generations, even years after the original event.

04Crows have very large brains for their body size. They can use simple tools, solve puzzles, and even play games for fun. Their face recognition skill probably helps them survive in cities, where humans can be either kind or dangerous.

05So if you ever feed a crow some bread in the park, that bird may remember your kind face for years. And if you ever throw a stone at a crow, well — its whole family may remember that, too, for a very long time. Be careful who watches you.
