Today, the Eiffel Tower is the symbol of Paris. Millions of people from all over the world travel to France just to see it. But few of them know that this famous iron tower was nearly destroyed only twenty years after it was first built.

The Eiffel Tower was finished in 1889 for a big international fair in Paris. At that time, it was the tallest building in the world. But many people in Paris did not like it. Artists and writers wrote angry letters in newspapers. They called the tower an "ugly metal monster" that ruined the beautiful old city.

The original plan was very clear. The city of Paris had given Gustave Eiffel permission to keep his tower for only 20 years. After that, in 1909, it had to be taken down and the iron was to be sold as scrap metal. It seemed that the Eiffel Tower would soon become only a memory.

But something new saved it: the radio. In the early 1900s, scientists discovered that the tall iron tower was perfect for sending and receiving radio signals. The French military quickly began using it to communicate over long distances. During World War I, the tower also helped catch enemy messages.

Because of its useful new role, the government decided to keep the tower standing. Today, the "ugly metal monster" is loved by the whole world. Without the invention of radio, the skyline of Paris would look very different.

01Today, the Eiffel Tower is the symbol of Paris. Millions of people from all over the world travel to France just to see it. But few of them know that this famous iron tower was nearly destroyed only twenty years after it was first built.

02The Eiffel Tower was finished in 1889 for a big international fair in Paris. At that time, it was the tallest building in the world. But many people in Paris did not like it. Artists and writers wrote angry letters in newspapers. They called the tower an "ugly metal monster" that ruined the beautiful old city.

03The original plan was very clear. The city of Paris had given Gustave Eiffel permission to keep his tower for only 20 years. After that, in 1909, it had to be taken down and the iron was to be sold as scrap metal. It seemed that the Eiffel Tower would soon become only a memory.

04But something new saved it: the radio. In the early 1900s, scientists discovered that the tall iron tower was perfect for sending and receiving radio signals. The French military quickly began using it to communicate over long distances. During World War I, the tower also helped catch enemy messages.

05Because of its useful new role, the government decided to keep the tower standing. Today, the "ugly metal monster" is loved by the whole world. Without the invention of radio, the skyline of Paris would look very different.
