The Real Reason for Daylight Saving Time
— It was never invented for farmers —

Twice a year, in many countries, people change their clocks. In spring, the clock jumps forward by one hour. In autumn, it goes back. This rule is called Daylight Saving Time, or DST. Many people believe it was invented to help farmers. But that idea is actually a myth.
The real story is much more surprising. During World War I, governments needed to save coal and electricity. In 1916, Germany became the first country to use DST nationwide. By moving the clock forward in spring, people would do more activities in natural sunlight in the evening, and use less lamp oil and electricity at home. Soon, other countries — including the United Kingdom and the United States — followed the same idea.
Interestingly, many farmers did not like DST at all. Cows, chickens, and the morning sun do not change with the clock. Farmers had to start milking and harvesting one hour earlier, sometimes in the dark. They often complained loudly to their governments.
After the war, some countries stopped DST, but it returned during World War II for the same reason: saving energy. Today, more than 70 countries still use it, though some, like Japan, never did.
Now scientists are not sure if DST really saves much energy. Some studies even show that people use more energy in air conditioning. So the rule that "helps farmers" may not really help anyone at all.

Why did governments introduce Daylight Saving Time during World War I?
"governments needed to save coal and electricity" が根拠。
Why did many farmers dislike DST?
"Cows, chickens, and the morning sun do not change with the clock."
Which country was the first to use DST nationwide?
"In 1916, Germany became the first country to use DST nationwide." イギリスとアメリカは followed(後に続いた)側。
What is the writer suggesting in the final sentence?
"the rule that 'helps farmers' may not really help anyone at all" ——引用符つきの "helps farmers" は皮肉の合図です。

01Twice a year, in many countries, people change their clocks. In spring, the clock jumps forward by one hour. In autumn, it goes back. This rule is called Daylight Saving Time, or DST. Many people believe it was invented to help farmers. But that idea is actually a myth.
これが Daylight Saving Time(サマータイム、DST)。
02The real story is much more surprising.
03Interestingly, many farmers did not like DST at all. Cows, chickens, and the morning sun do not change with the clock. Farmers had to start milking and harvesting one hour earlier, sometimes in the dark. They often complained loudly to their governments.
04After the war, some countries stopped DST, but it returned during World War II for the same reason: saving energy. Today, more than 70 countries still use it, though some, like Japan, never did.
05Now scientists are not sure if DST really saves much energy. Some studies even show that people use more energy in air conditioning. So the rule that "helps farmers" may not really help anyone at all.
