Today, we say "hello" almost every day. We say it to friends, to strangers, and even to our phones. But surprisingly, "hello" is a young word. About 150 years ago, almost no one used it as a greeting.

The story of "hello" is closely connected to the telephone. In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell invented the first practical telephone. He thought the best way to start a call was to say "Ahoy! Ahoy!" — a word used by sailors at sea.

But another famous inventor, Thomas Edison, did not like "ahoy." He thought it sounded strange. In 1877, Edison wrote a letter to a phone company and suggested a different word: "Hello." He said it was short, clear, and easy to hear on the line.

The phone companies liked the idea. Soon, telephone books in America started teaching new users to begin every call by saying "Hello." Workers at telephone offices were even called "hello girls" because they answered so many calls all day.

Before the telephone, "hello" was just an old word used to call attention to someone far away, like "Hey!" or "Hi there!" But once it became the standard phone greeting, people began to use it everywhere — in the street, at the office, and in letters.

So every time you say "Hello," you are using a word that became popular thanks to one machine and one inventor's small idea.

01Today, we say "hello" almost every day. We say it to friends, to strangers, and even to our phones. But surprisingly, "hello" is a young word. About 150 years ago, almost no one used it as a greeting.

02The story of "hello" is closely connected to the telephone. In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell invented the first practical telephone. He thought the best way to start a call was to say "Ahoy! Ahoy!" — a word used by sailors at sea.

03But another famous inventor, Thomas Edison, did not like "ahoy." He thought it sounded strange. In 1877, Edison wrote a letter to a phone company and suggested a different word: "Hello." He said it was short, clear, and easy to hear on the line.

04The phone companies liked the idea. Soon, telephone books in America started teaching new users to begin every call by saying "Hello." Workers at telephone offices were even called "hello girls" because they answered so many calls all day.

05Before the telephone, "hello" was just an old word used to call attention to someone far away, like "Hey!" or "Hi there!" But once it became the standard phone greeting, people began to use it everywhere — in the street, at the office, and in letters.

06So every time you say "Hello," you are using a word that became popular thanks to one machine and one inventor's small idea.
