In Tokyo, lunch often ends in 15 minutes. In New York, many people eat at their desks while looking at the screen. But in Paris, a single lunch can take two hours, and no one thinks it strange. Why do French people eat so slowly?

For French families, a meal is not just food. It is a time to talk, laugh, and enjoy life. Even a simple lunch usually has several small courses: a starter, a main dish, some cheese, and finally a dessert with coffee. People put down their forks between bites and share stories.

French children learn this from a very young age. Schools serve real lunches with three or four courses, and students must sit at the table for about 45 minutes. Eating fast or skipping a course is considered rude. From childhood, they are taught that food deserves time and attention.

Interestingly, France has one of the lowest rates of obesity in Europe. Many scientists think slow eating is one reason. When we eat slowly, our brain has time to feel full, and we stop before eating too much.

Of course, life is busy and not everyone can sit for two hours. But the French show us something simple: when we slow down, food tastes better, conversations grow deeper, and the body knows when to say "enough." Maybe a slower meal really is a smarter meal.

01In Tokyo, lunch often ends in 15 minutes. In New York, many people eat at their desks while looking at the screen. But in Paris, a single lunch can take two hours, and no one thinks it strange. Why do French people eat so slowly?

02For French families, a meal is not just food. It is a time to talk, laugh, and enjoy life. Even a simple lunch usually has several small courses: a starter, a main dish, some cheese, and finally a dessert with coffee. People put down their forks between bites and share stories.

03French children learn this from a very young age. Schools serve real lunches with three or four courses, and students must sit at the table for about 45 minutes. Eating fast or skipping a course is considered rude. From childhood, they are taught that food deserves time and attention.

04Interestingly, France has one of the lowest rates of obesity in Europe. Many scientists think slow eating is one reason. When we eat slowly, our brain has time to feel full, and we stop before eating too much.

05Of course, life is busy and not everyone can sit for two hours. But the French show us something simple: when we slow down, food tastes better, conversations grow deeper, and the body knows when to say "enough." Maybe a slower meal really is a smarter meal.

  • put down one's fork
  • know when to say enough やめどきが分かる when to do(いつ〜すべきか)は疑問詞+不定詞の型
