If you have ever seen dolphins swimming in the sea, you may have heard them making strange high sounds. For many years, scientists thought these whistles were just noise. But today, we know they are much more interesting than that.
Every dolphin has its own special whistle called a "signature whistle." It is like a name. A young dolphin learns and creates this whistle in the first year of its life. Once it has chosen the whistle, it keeps the same one for the rest of its life — sometimes for over 40 years.
Other dolphins remember and use these whistles. When a mother dolphin loses sight of her baby, she calls out the baby's signature whistle. When two old friends meet again after a long time, they greet each other with their own special sounds. Dolphins really do call each other by name.
In one study, scientists in Scotland recorded dolphin whistles and played them back through underwater speakers. When a dolphin heard its own signature whistle, it usually turned and answered. But when it heard the whistle of a stranger, it ignored the sound and swam away.
So far, only humans, dolphins, and a few parrots are known to use individual names. Next time you see a dolphin show, listen carefully. Those happy little squeaks might be old friends saying, "Hey, that's me!"

In the Scottish study, what did the dolphins' reactions show?
When does a dolphin decide on its signature whistle?
"learns and creates this whistle in the first year of its life" が根拠。
Why is the whistle called a "signature" whistle?
signature=署名。署名は「その人だと分かる印」なので、そこから「個体を特定する」意味になります。本文も "It is like a name." と言い換えています。語のイメージを日本語の訳語に閉じ込めないのがコツ。
Why does the writer mention humans, dolphins, and a few parrots together?
"So far, only humans, dolphins, and a few parrots are known to..."

01If you have ever seen dolphins swimming in the sea, you may have heard them making strange high sounds. For many years, scientists thought these whistles were just noise. But today, we know they are much more interesting than that.
02Every dolphin has its own special whistle called a "signature whistle." It is like a name. A young dolphin learns and creates this whistle in the first year of its life. Once it has chosen the whistle, it keeps the same one for the rest of its life — sometimes for over 40 years.
03Other dolphins remember and use these whistles. When a mother dolphin loses sight of her baby, she calls out the baby's signature whistle. When two old friends meet again after a long time, they greet each other with their own special sounds. Dolphins really do call each other by name.
04In one study, scientists in Scotland recorded dolphin whistles and played them back through underwater speakers. When a dolphin heard its own signature whistle, it usually turned and answered. But when it heard the whistle of a stranger, it ignored the sound and swam away.
05So far, only humans, dolphins, and a few parrots are known to use individual names. Next time you see a dolphin show, listen carefully. Those happy little squeaks might be old friends saying, "Hey, that's me!"
