It is hard to believe that a quiet drink like tea once led to a war. But in 1773, a group of angry men in Boston changed the course of history because of it.
At that time, America was not yet an independent country. It was a colony of Great Britain. The British government needed money, so it made the colonists pay many taxes. One famous tax was on tea. The colonists thought this was unfair because they could not vote in the British parliament. Their slogan was "No taxation without representation."
On the night of December 16th, 1773, about 100 American men quietly went to the Boston harbor. Some of them dressed as Native Americans to hide their faces. Three ships from the British East India Company were waiting there, full of tea. The men climbed on board and dropped 342 large boxes of tea into the cold sea.
The whole event lasted only three hours, and no one was hurt. But it sent a strong message: "We will not accept these unfair taxes." Today we call this event the Boston Tea Party.
The British were angry and closed the port of Boston. The colonists became even angrier. Two years later, in 1775, the American War of Independence began.
So a few boxes of tea, thrown into the sea on a winter night, helped to create a new country.

Why did the colonists think the tea tax was unfair?
"they could not vote in the British parliament" +スローガン "No taxation without representation"(代表なくして課税なし)が根拠。
Why did some of the men dress as Native Americans that night?
"Some of them dressed as Native Americans to hide their faces."
What is suggested by the fact that the event lasted three hours and no one was hurt?
"But it sent a strong message" と続くのが手がかり。
How long after the Boston Tea Party did the War of Independence begin?
本文にも "Two years later, in 1775" とあります。
