The Power of Smiling at Strangers

— Why a fake smile still lifts your mood —

You wake up tired. Your train is full. The barista at the coffee shop looks busy. Then suddenly, a stranger smiles at you. For a moment, the morning feels a little softer. Why does this happen?

Scientists have studied smiling for a long time. They found that smiling is not just a result of happiness — it can actually create it. When you move the muscles around your mouth and eyes, your brain receives a signal that says, "Something good is happening." The brain then releases small amounts of happy chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin.

One famous experiment asked people to hold a pencil between their teeth. This forced their face into a kind of smile. After watching a cartoon, those people reported finding it funnier than people who held the pencil with their lips, which made them frown. Even a fake smile made the brain feel a little brighter.

Smiling is also social. When you smile at someone, mirror neurons in their brain often copy your expression. The other person feels a small lift of mood and may even smile back. That small exchange can change a stressed morning into a warm one.

So next time you are walking down a quiet street or waiting at a station, try giving a soft smile to someone. It costs nothing, takes one second, and may quietly travel from face to face all day long.

01You wake up tired. Your train is full. The barista at the coffee shop looks busy. Then suddenly, a stranger smiles at you. For a moment, the morning feels a little softer. Why does this happen?

02Scientists have studied smiling for a long time. They found that smiling is not just a result of happiness — it can actually create it. When you move the muscles around your mouth and eyes, your brain receives a signal that says, "Something good is happening."

03One famous experiment asked people to hold a pencil between their teeth. This forced their face into a kind of smile. After watching a cartoon, those people reported finding it funnier than people who held the pencil with their lips, which made them frown. Even a fake smile made the brain feel a little brighter.

04Smiling is also social. When you smile at someone, mirror neurons in their brain often copy your expression. The other person feels a small lift of mood and may even smile back. That small exchange can change a stressed morning into a warm one.

05So next time you are walking down a quiet street or waiting at a station, try giving a soft smile to someone. It costs nothing, takes one second, and may quietly travel from face to face all day long.

call back / write back も同じ
