Why the Sky Turns Red at Sunset
— The hidden colors traveling through the air —

Have you ever stopped to watch a beautiful red sunset? The whole sky burns with orange, pink, and deep red. It looks like magic, but it is really just science doing its job.
Sunlight looks white, but it actually contains every color of the rainbow mixed together. You can see this when you use a glass prism or when a rainbow appears after rain. Each color travels in waves, and some waves are short, like blue, while others are long, like red.
When sunlight enters our atmosphere, it hits tiny air molecules. Short waves like blue and violet bounce around easily, which is why the sky looks blue during the day. We call this "scattering."
At sunset, the sun is low. Its light has to travel through much more air to reach our eyes — almost ten times the distance. The blue and violet waves get scattered so much that they disappear before they reach us. Only the long red and orange waves can survive the long journey.
This is also why fires, large cities, or dust storms can make sunsets even more colorful. More tiny particles in the air mean more scattering of the short waves.
So a red sunset is not really a fire in the sky. It is your eyes catching only the slowest, longest waves of light — the last colors strong enough to reach you.

Why does red light survive the journey to our eyes at sunset?
第4段落 "The blue and violet waves get scattered so much that they disappear... Only the long red and orange waves can survive."
At sunset, roughly how far does sunlight travel through the air compared with midday?
"almost ten times the distance" が根拠。
According to the passage, why can a dust storm make a sunset more colorful?
"More tiny particles in the air mean more scattering of the short waves."
What does the writer mean by "a red sunset is not really a fire in the sky"?
冒頭の "It looks like magic, but it is really just science" と対になる一文です。not A but B の形(ここでは but が省かれ、続く文がCを担う)。

01Have you ever stopped to watch a beautiful red sunset? The whole sky burns with orange, pink, and deep red. It looks like magic, but it is really just science doing its job.
02Sunlight looks white, but it actually contains every color of the rainbow mixed together. You can see this when you use a glass prism or when a rainbow appears after rain. Each color travels in waves, and some waves are short, like blue, while others are long, like red.
03When sunlight enters our atmosphere, it hits tiny air molecules. Short waves like blue and violet bounce around easily, which is why the sky looks blue during the day. We call this "scattering."
04At sunset, the sun is low. Its light has to travel through much more air to reach our eyes — almost ten times the distance. The blue and violet waves get scattered so much that they disappear before they reach us. Only the long red and orange waves can survive the long journey.
05This is also why fires, large cities, or dust storms can make sunsets even more colorful. More tiny particles in the air mean more scattering of the short waves.
06So a red sunset is not really a fire in the sky. It is your eyes catching only the slowest, longest waves of light — the last colors strong enough to reach you.
