You probably say "goodbye" many times every day. Maybe to your family in the morning, to your friends after class, or to your dog before going out. But have you ever thought about what this little word really means?
Long ago in England, around the 1500s, people did not say "goodbye." Instead, they said a much longer sentence: "God be with you." It was a kind of prayer. When you left someone, you wished that God would keep them safe until you met again.
Over the years, people started to speak faster. "God be with you" was too long for daily life. Slowly, it became "God bye," then "Godbwye," and finally just "goodbye." The "god" quietly turned into "good," perhaps because other greetings like "good morning" and "good night" were popular at the same time.
This change is called "contraction." Many short English words started out as long phrases. For example, "hello" came from older greetings, and "bye" is just a shorter form of "goodbye."
So next time you say "goodbye," remember: you are saying something like a 500-year-old prayer. The original speakers were not just being polite — they were sending warm wishes for safety.
Language changes quietly, like a river slowly carving rocks. We use the same words our great-great-grandparents used, but the meanings keep moving.

Why did the "God" in "God be with you" probably become "good"?
"perhaps because other greetings like 'good morning' and 'good night' were popular at the same time" が根拠。perhaps が付いているとおり、これは断定ではなく推測。本文が控えめに言っていることを、断定した選択肢に置き換えるのもワナの一種です。
What is a "contraction," according to the passage?
"Many short English words started out as long phrases" が定義の言い換え。started out as ~(もとは〜だった)が手がかりです。意味の変化(1つ目)と形の短縮は別の現象なので、区別して読むこと。
What does "like a river slowly carving rocks" suggest about language?
川が岩を削るのはゆっくりで、見ていても分からないけれど確実に進む変化。直前の "Language changes quietly" が読み解きのカギです。比喩は必ず、直前か直後の一文が種明かしをしています。
What is the writer's main point?
"you are saying something like a 500-year-old prayer" が主旨。should(〜すべきだ)で始まる選択肢は、筆者が提案していない限り外れます。この文章は読者に何かを勧めていない点に注意。

日本語訳(段落ごとの対訳)
01You probably say "goodbye" many times every day. Maybe to your family in the morning, to your friends after class, or to your dog before going out. But have you ever thought about what this little word really means?
「goodbye」って、たぶん毎日何回も口にしていますよね。朝、家族に。学校のあと、友達に。出かける前に犬に。でも、この小さな言葉の本当の意味、考えたことありますか?
02Long ago in England, around the 1500s, people did not say "goodbye." Instead, they said a much longer sentence: "God be with you." It was a kind of prayer. When you left someone, you wished that God would keep them safe until you met again.
ずっと昔、1500年代のイングランドでは「goodbye」とは言いませんでした。代わりに使っていたのは、もっと長い一文——「God be with you(神があなたとともにありますように)」。これは一種の祈りだったんです。誰かと別れるとき、また会えるまで神様が無事に守ってくれるように、と願いを込めていたんですね。
03Over the years, people started to speak faster. "God be with you" was too long for daily life. Slowly, it became "God bye," then "Godbwye," and finally just "goodbye." The "god" quietly turned into "good," perhaps because other greetings like "good morning" and "good night" were popular at the same time.
時代が下るにつれ、人々の話し方はどんどん速くなりました。日常的に使うには "God be with you" は長すぎる。少しずつ、"God bye" → "Godbwye" → そして最終的に "goodbye" に縮まっていきます。"god" がこっそり "good" に変わったのは、当時 "good morning"・"good night" のような挨拶がポピュラーだったからかもしれません。
04This change is called "contraction." Many short English words started out as long phrases. For example, "hello" came from older greetings, and "bye" is just a shorter form of "goodbye."
こうした変化を「contraction(短縮)」と呼びます。英語の短い単語の多くは、元はもっと長いフレーズだったんですよ。たとえば "hello" も古い挨拶語が由来ですし、"bye" は "goodbye" をさらに縮めた形です。
05So next time you say "goodbye," remember: you are saying something like a 500-year-old prayer. The original speakers were not just being polite — they were sending warm wishes for safety.
だから今度 "goodbye" と言うときは、思い出してみてください——あなたは500年前の祈りの言葉を口にしているんです。当時の人は単に礼儀正しかったのではなく、相手の安全を願う温かい気持ちを送っていたんですよ。
06Language changes quietly, like a river slowly carving rocks. We use the same words our great-great-grandparents used, but the meanings keep moving.

も "Take care." も、途中で切れたままの一言ですね^^
