Most animals have one heart. Humans have one. Dogs have one. Even huge elephants have one. But did you know that octopuses have three hearts? It is one of the strangest facts in the animal world.

Two of the octopus's hearts pump blood to its gills. The gills take oxygen from the water. The third heart pumps blood to the rest of the body. When the octopus swims, this third heart actually stops working!

That is why octopuses prefer to walk along the sea floor. They have nine brains too. One main brain in the head, and one small brain in each of their eight arms. Each arm can move on its own and even solve simple problems.

Octopus blood is unusual too. Our blood is red because of iron. But octopus blood is blue because of copper. This blue blood can carry oxygen better in cold deep water. So octopuses can live in places we cannot.

Octopuses are very smart for their family of animals. They can open jars, use tools, and even escape from tanks at night. In one famous case in 2016, an octopus named Inky escaped from a New Zealand aquarium through a drain pipe.

So next time you see an octopus at the aquarium, look closely. Three hearts, nine brains, blue blood — and probably planning its next clever move.

01Most animals have one heart. Humans have one. Dogs have one. Even huge elephants have one. But did you know that octopuses have three hearts? It is one of the strangest facts in the animal world.

02Two of the octopus's hearts pump blood to its gills. The gills take oxygen from the water. The third heart pumps blood to the rest of the body. When the octopus swims, this third heart actually stops working!

03That is why octopuses prefer to walk along the sea floor. They have nine brains too. One main brain in the head, and one small brain in each of their eight arms. Each arm can move on its own and even solve simple problems.

04Octopus blood is unusual too. Our blood is red because of iron. But octopus blood is blue because of copper. This blue blood can carry oxygen better in cold deep water. So octopuses can live in places we cannot.

05Octopuses are very smart for their family of animals. They can open jars, use tools, and even escape from tanks at night. In one famous case in 2016, an octopus named Inky escaped from a New Zealand aquarium through a drain pipe.

06So next time you see an octopus at the aquarium, look closely. Three hearts, nine brains, blue blood — and probably planning its next clever move.

  • That is why ~
  • on its own 自力で・単独で Each arm can move on its own. by itself
