When you watch the Olympic Games today, athletes wear special clothes. But about 2,700 years ago in ancient Greece, the first Olympics were very different. The athletes wore nothing at all.
The first Olympic Games started in 776 BC in a small Greek town called Olympia. The Greeks held the Games every four years to honor Zeus, the king of their gods. Only Greek men could join. Women were not even allowed to watch.
But why naked? The Greeks believed the human body was beautiful and noble. They also thought clothes would slow runners down. One famous story says a runner won a race because his shorts fell off. After that, all athletes ran without clothes.
The athletes used olive oil on their skin. This made their bodies shine in the sun. After the games, they used a special metal tool to scrape off the oil and dirt. Some Greeks even sold this dirty oil as medicine!
The modern Olympic Games returned in 1896 in Athens, after a long break of 1,500 years. This time, athletes wore clothes. Women could finally join in 1900. Today, the Olympics include over 200 countries and millions of fans.
So next time you watch the Olympics, remember: this huge global event began as a religious festival, with men running naked under the Greek summer sun.

According to the passage, why did ancient Greek athletes compete without clothes?
What did the athletes do with the olive oil after the Games?
"they used a special metal tool to scrape off the oil and dirt. Some Greeks even sold this dirty oil as medicine!"
How long after the modern Games began were women finally able to take part?
What contrast does the last paragraph draw?

01When you watch the Olympic Games today, athletes wear special clothes. But about 2,700 years ago in ancient Greece, the first Olympics were very different. The athletes wore nothing at all.
02The first Olympic Games started in 776 BC in a small Greek town called Olympia. The Greeks held the Games every four years to honor Zeus, the king of their gods. Only Greek men could join. Women were not even allowed to watch.
03But why naked? The Greeks believed the human body was beautiful and noble. They also thought clothes would slow runners down. One famous story says a runner won a race because his shorts fell off. After that, all athletes ran without clothes.
04The athletes used olive oil on their skin. This made their bodies shine in the sun. After the games, they used a special metal tool to scrape off the oil and dirt. Some Greeks even sold this dirty oil as medicine!
05The modern Olympic Games returned in 1896 in Athens, after a long break of 1,500 years. This time, athletes wore clothes. Women could finally join in 1900. Today, the Olympics include over 200 countries and millions of fans.
06So next time you watch the Olympics, remember: this huge global event began as a religious festival, with men running naked under the Greek summer sun.

Olympus(オリンポス山)と、競技が行われた町Olympia。さらに「stadium(スタジアム)」もギリシャ語のstadion(約185m)が語源で、これは最初の徒競走の距離なんです。
