Why We Forget Names So Quickly

— The science of memory and the forgetting curve —

Have you ever met someone new and forgotten their name only thirty seconds later? Don't worry. You are not strange. Most people forget names quickly. This is just how the human brain works.

When we hear new information, our brain first puts it into short-term memory. This part of the brain is small. It can only hold a few things at one time. To keep the name longer, the brain must work harder.

A German scientist named Hermann Ebbinghaus studied this in 1885. He learned long lists of words and tested himself many times. He found something surprising. After just one hour, people forget about 50% of new information. After 24 hours, they forget 70%. He called this the "forgetting curve."

But why are names so hard? Names are just sounds. They have no clear meaning. If you meet a man called Mike, your brain has nothing to link to. But if you meet a baker or a teacher, your brain can imagine the job easily.

There is a simple trick. Repeat the name out loud right away. Use it three times in the conversation. Link it to a picture in your mind. With small effort, the name moves into long-term memory.

So next time you meet someone, smile and say their name back. You are not just being polite — you are training your brain.

01Have you ever met someone new and forgotten their name only thirty seconds later? Don't worry. You are not strange. Most people forget names quickly. This is just how the human brain works.

02When we hear new information, our brain first puts it into short-term memory. This part of the brain is small. It can only hold a few things at one time. To keep the name longer, the brain must work harder.

03A German scientist named Hermann Ebbinghaus studied this in 1885. He learned long lists of words and tested himself many times. He found something surprising. After just one hour, people forget about 50% of new information. After 24 hours, they forget 70%. He called this the "forgetting curve."

04But why are names so hard? Names are just sounds. They have no clear meaning. If you meet a man called Mike, your brain has nothing to link to. But if you meet a baker or a teacher, your brain can imagine the job easily.

05There is a simple trick. Repeat the name out loud right away. Use it three times in the conversation. Link it to a picture in your mind. With small effort, the name moves into long-term memory.

06So next time you meet someone, smile and say their name back. You are not just being polite — you are training your brain.

  • link A to B AをBと結びつける 記憶・関連づけの話で必ず出る動詞
  • not just A but B AだけでなくBも 本文はダッシュで but を省いた形。
