Have you ever watched a bee fly through your garden? It looks like the bee is just moving randomly. But each bee actually knows exactly where it is going — and how to tell its friends, too.
Bees use a special "dance" to share information. When a bee finds a good flower with lots of food, it flies back to the hive. Then it does a small dance on the wall. Other bees watch carefully, and after just a few seconds, they know where to go.
This dance is called the "waggle dance." The bee walks in a figure eight, shaking its body in the middle. The direction of the shake shows the angle from the sun. The length of the dance shows the distance to the flower. Just one minute of dancing can mean a flower is one kilometer away!
An Austrian scientist named Karl von Frisch discovered this in 1945. People did not believe him at first. "Animals can't really talk!" they said. But von Frisch did many experiments and proved it. He won the Nobel Prize in 1973 for his work.
Bees can also use the sun as a map. Even on cloudy days, they can see the polarized light in the sky. This helps them find their way home from many kilometers away.
So the next time you see a bee in a flower, remember: it might be writing a message — telling its family exactly where the best food is hiding.

A bee watches a waggle dance that lasts only a few seconds. What can the bee most likely tell from this?
"The length of the dance shows the distance" +「1分踊れば1km先」から逆算します。
What does the direction of the bee's shaking show?
"The direction of the shake shows the angle from the sun."
Why didn't people believe von Frisch at first?
"'Animals can't really talk!' they said."
Why does the writer mention polarized light on cloudy days?

01Have you ever watched a bee fly through your garden? It looks like the bee is just moving randomly. But each bee actually knows exactly where it is going — and how to tell its friends, too.
02Bees use a special "dance" to share information. When a bee finds a good flower with lots of food, it flies back to the hive. Then it does a small dance on the wall. Other bees watch carefully, and after just a few seconds, they know where to go.
03This dance is called the "waggle dance." The bee walks in a figure eight, shaking its body in the middle. The direction of the shake shows the angle from the sun. The length of the dance shows the distance to the flower. Just one minute of dancing can mean a flower is one kilometer away!
04An Austrian scientist named Karl von Frisch discovered this in 1945. People did not believe him at first. "Animals can't really talk!" they said. But von Frisch did many experiments and proved it. He won the Nobel Prize in 1973 for his work.
05Bees can also use the sun as a map. Even on cloudy days, they can see the polarized light in the sky. This helps them find their way home from many kilometers away.
06So the next time you see a bee in a flower, remember: it might be writing a message — telling its family exactly where the best food is hiding.
