入試の言い換え

• reason 理由 — 最も平易。There is no reason for ~ で置き換え可能
• grounds 根拠 — 複数形で。on the grounds that ~（〜という理由で）
• excuse 言い訳；口実 — 否定的。正当とは言いにくい理由
• rationale 論理的根拠 — 方針・決定の背後にある理屈。発音 /ˌræʃəˈnæl/
• defense 弁護；擁護 — 批判に対して立場を守る論拠
• explanation 説明 — 正当性の主張を含まない中立語
• warrant 正当な根拠 — There is no warrant for ~ の形で。やや硬い

Word などの「両端揃え」は英語で justify。行の左右両端を「正しく（just）」揃える、という発想。「目的は手段を正当化する」は The end justifies the means. で、評論文の倫理テーマに頻出。
